As I write this, I'm listening to a live version of "A Love Supreme" recorded at the 1965 Antibes Jazz Festival. According to AllMusic, this was the only time that Coltrane and his band played it in concert. Needless to say, the playing is phenomenal. So good in fact, I'm having a very difficult time thinking about the task at hand: writing this blog.

Things are very quiet right now and we're all enjoying a bit of rest before we head back to Europe early next year. There really isn't much to report, so I'd just to say thank you to everyone who has come out and supported us over the last 7 or 8 months. There are so many great memories swimming in my head right now that I know it will take me years before I can sort through them all. To have been given the opportunity to grow both as a musician and as a person is something that I will cherish and value for a long time.

To return Coltrane for second: Even if I practice 24-hours a day for the rest of my life I will never come close to being to able to play like Coltrane, Davis, Malmsteen, or Van Halen. However, I don't find that discouraging at all. Besides notes, phrasing, technique, or anything else you might glean from these players, what I try to take away from them is their complete devotion and dedication to their instruments and to their music. I've barely been home a week and I'm already looking forward to playing with the band again.

See you in Europe,

Jeff

Live coltrane...

I have some FLAC files from live 1961, 1962, and 1965 shows. The quality of the '62 and '65 Coltrane quartet shows are amazing for the most part. Let me know if you want them Jeff

What's really amazing to me about the Coltrane shows is how the bassist will go on for a 10 minute jam, and the crowd is utterly silent. It feels like you could hear a pin drop there, as the audiences ears so desperately want to soak up every last note. It's amazing that so many people would pay so close attention...and quietly, especially given that the bass is acoustic. I love the moment that the drums and keys/sax/piano kick in, and the crowd catches/reinforces the moment so well with their applause.

He/they (Coltrane and band) are definitely amazing musicians...even almost 50 years later, it's amazing how they set the bar then and now....even including the near future.

Love the blog, and glad the Pumpkins are listening to some kick ass jazz =)

im sad i wont be seeing you in europe...

No one is ever meant to be like anyone else. The issue isn't being "as good as" or "equal" it is really, what is your beautiful foot print going to be left on this earth. You are much better yourself. Much love and blessings, bella. Vande

Once again critics aren't always musicians.

It really annoys me that I've been hearing talk that the new band isn't the old band and etc, but come on Pitchfork media, and other self-important scenester magz just can't seem to spot the difference between manufactured bands (r.k and b.y.o.p) and real bands (like the pumkins, black moth super rainbow and sonic youth)with much accuracy. It is people like that that have to be told what music to like (via record company dads in chatrooms) and what clothes to wear. DADADADADADaDA.

The new band kicks just as much ass as the old band- it's just a different dynamic. I especially like the fact that it looks like Jeff and Corgan can trade solos which I think is bad ass. Iha or Darcy never really improvised much.

I was here for the first show (may 22, Le Grand Rex) and of course will be here again at Bercy (february 6). The first show was amazing, so I can't wait to see and hear you playing now that you must feel much more comfortable. You'll see, Bercy is fit for big rock explosion, the sound will be great!
Take rest guys, you deserve it.
