I think it's superior to the original. The bad production is what makes this song so great in my opinion. And quite possibly the most original Pumpkin song ever recorded.

Indeed. I've always liked the super-spacey Machina II version. It's the most other-worldly thing the Pumpkins have ever produced. It's challenging and abrasive, but damn if it isn't heavy and spooky.

heavily distorted percussion is almost always a good choice

Challenging is a good way to describe it. It's like hearing a computer breaking down into insanity.
