Has anyone else heard the way they play Stand Inside Your Love on the Oceania tour yet? I seriously HATE the way Billy sings it. The way he sings the chorus "who wouldn't be the one you love" is what made me fall in love with the song in the first place but the way he's currently singing it sounds almost lazy. I know they try to make it more spacey and psychedelic but I'm really not digging it one bit. Why change up a song that was already so good? But hey that's just me. Your thoughts?

wow... no offence but billy isn't the same vocally as he was even 5 yrs ago. So tbh I am not upset that he changes it up to soot his vocals today.

I never really liked SIYL live. The studio version has so much magic and that EBOW... it just can't compare

Listening to this live recording of SIYL from 1998 that has different vocals that the studio version too. Billy's voice is slower, deeper and more dreamy than the original studio version. Sounds great. And the live band is awesome. This was a long time ago, with other band members, I do realize that.

They didn't play SIYL at the gig I went to in October, but hopefully they'll play it at one of the gigs that I'm attending in December!

maybe he doesn't "feel" it the way he once did? so it's not as powerful in his vocals? lack of feeling/passion!

^ That would certainly be the assumption, since he supposedly wrote it about Yelena. And since they are no longer togetherrrrrr...

It hasn't sounded good live since the reformation, and Billy's uninspired vox are most definitely the reason. I hate how he sings the one part these days. When he sings this line: 'Who wouldn't be the one you love, who wouldn't stand inside your love', and he doesn't even say the first syllable of the word who. I cringe when I hear it.

That said, he sounded phenomenal on every song last tour. Obscured, Geek, Ruby, Pissant, Frail & Beddazzled, Muzzle, Silverfuck, etc. The new songs, you name it. Because he regained interest in that era of his career while putting the SD and Gish reissues together. Same with XYU this tour.

Point being, if he doesn't FEEL the song, then fuck playing it. Fuck the fans, and expectation. He can even continue playing some singles if he so desires, so long as he still stirs emotion from his voice. Songs like Disarm and Tonight Tonight, and dare I say, Bullet, still showcase this.

Oh, yes. "there is no good singing. There is only present and absent"

I've always found this to be a song that doesn't transfer well live (Everlasting Gaze and 1979 being two other examples of singles that aren't great in the live arena). In general, I think his vocals are better live these days, especially as compared to Gish-Mellon Collie. With Adore and MACHINA he is much more listenable live to my ear, and then pretty much from Zwan through to now he sounds pretty great.

I think the first live performance of siyl was the best rendition of the song.

I completely disagree, actually. The United Center 2000 version of Everlasting Gaze is fantastic (although I'll admit the ones that were played closer to the studio tempo of the song don't translate so well), and I love 1979 live (the faster version they did on the Adore [I think?] tour, acoustic, electric, whatever. Always sounds great to me). Stand Inside Your Love is hit and miss for me, depends on the recording... Sometimes it's a little flat, sometimes it sounds great to me.

I do like the Adore tour versions of just about everything, including 1979. I just meant in general, new band or old band, those songs are misses more often than hits. I actually saw a version of Everlasting Gaze last week that I thought was really cool, and the one performed this year for that June South American festival was pretty good as well. I just think, relative to the studio recordings of those songs, which are very good and very distinctive (Everlasting with that overdriven practice amp sound, particularly in the bass; 1979 with all the electronics) the live versions, when performed in that style, come up short (I think people have sometimes made similar remarks about Tonight, Tonight?).
By contrast, I would say singles like The Celestials, Today, Bullet and Siva hold up great, and Ava Adore is AMAZING (granted, played in a more 'rock' style. The version with pumped in electronics isn't my favorite).
Of course this is completely subjective :)/>/>

This I actually do agree with; there is so much energy in that performance. It's just really exciting. Except for the vocals, which are out of tune for...like the first third

Tonight Tonight sounded excellent at the 1996 (97?) VMAs with the orchestral section backing the band.

The 20th Anniversary Tour rendition of Tonight Tonight sounded phenomenal, as well. If only his voice was more 'into it', it would be, in my opinion, the definitive version. The can't just outright play the song. They need to have something to replicate the majesty of the studio recording (strings, etc), or it won't work.

That said, the new band has seldom done the song justice since the 2008 tour. I think they finally got it down well enough to be enjoyable this tour, though. Mike's drumming finally is up to par enough to not detract from the song, and the Tonite Reprise intro is sweet. Not to mention, Jeff mimicking the orchestral arrangement on his guitar. Gotta say, I'm liking Jeff more and more. :)/>

I generally am okay with Tonight Tonight live; I was just citing that as one single that people usually don't respond well to precisely because it likes that propulsion of the orchestra. Though again, I totally agree--the 20th Anniversary Tour version of Tonight Tonight was phenomenal, and the version on this tour is excellent as well. As long as theres some sort of melodic instrumental lead (keys in 08; E-Bow now) I enjoy hearing it :)/> Jeff is the shit

I heard it on the Other Side of The Kaliedyscope Tour... It did lack that passion that the Machina version had
