this had some really good songs being played...god do I love the old songs. The sounds from back then hold a power that no artist now days can seem to over power. And Billy is definitely one of those who has done some remarkable sounds in his own unique way from being inspired by these great artists from the 60's and 70's. sure the 80's had some good stuff, but there is something that really captures your soul from the earlier rock

He has said this before in various interviews I know, so it is not really anything new....but what I was curious about, as much as he "talks down" about former members of his band(s), have they really defended themselves / responded in interviews? Granted, they are not "popular" enough probably now to interview...but have they responded anywhere along the way and did I kinda miss it?
On a side note, is it me or is it kinda funny that the original band and all problems / lack of musical talent according to Corgan, is the Smashing Pumpkins which produced the best known music and most "successful" on many levels

It sounded a bit harsh but within the context of the conversation he was asked about a quote that was written about the original band in which someone described them as 4 virtuosos. Billy said that wasn't true and that James and D'arcy had a musicality about them but were not great musicians. In fact being really good was kind of looked down upon at that time.
This isn't anything we haven't heard before and I'll admit it kinda turned me off to hear him say that but in the context of the conversation it makes more sense. I don't think this interview is important enough to reach James or D'arcy and even if they did hear these remarks they probably wouldn't disagree.
You know Kurt Cobain was no Eddie van halen but that didn't matter. You couldn't put eddie van halen in Nirvana and come out with the same music. Although compared to EVH Cobain was not a great musician either.

i kept wondering why he borrowed as often as he did. i know he initially wanted the band to have a certain sound or feel based on some of his favorite bands. but, i didn't know the guitar doesn't come to him as naturally as it appears.

To be fair, the same could be said for a lot of the supposed guitar greats. I don't think the likes of Gilmore and Keith Richards are known for their improvisational skills, they often rank among the top ten though.

He's downplaying his guitar playing because he has such respect for people like Uli Jon Roth who really are virtuosos.
The hendrix influence is pretty apparent especially with the feedback but everybody was influenced by hendrix.

being a virtuso and writing good songs aren´´t the same.
i prefer good song writers. somehow they show much more musicality.
having a unique style counts also much more than playing fast or technically perfect. look at neil youn for example, he isn´´t playing the high speed solos or anything special, but the way he plays is unique. billy has also his kind of style, morello u can find out of a hundred guitar players at once. the one i meantioned are the real heros for me , cause they have a unique style. surely there are many more and also there are unknown guitarists out there who can play like hell and play every sonate or style, but in the end they cannot write good arranged and beautiful songs. it´´s like doing any trick diego maradona or messi has done, but playing in a 5 th canadian soccer league.

That seems accurate. I have heard people praise the recorded guitar work on the earlier albums and his songwriting ability. Yet many also agree that his guitar playing, particularly live, is very sloppy. However, it never really mattered to me. It was not the guitar playing that attracted me to the band.
