Billy Corgan on the cover of Rolling Stone, August 2012

I saw the post on FB last night that has the picture of the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone which has Billy's pic on it with the caption "The Return of the Smashing Pumpkins". To me, this was completely unexpected and is absolutely massive news, and promotion for the band. Billy Corgan's face will be shown everywhere magazines are sold for the first time since 1995. I can't imagine a bigger return to mainstream culture at this point in BC's career, even though the magazine is not what it once was. This is a huge deal.

It's not the US = real version of "Rolling Stone", as far as I can tell it's the New Zealand edition. What made the US cover, sadly, was Deadmaus and a "dance madness" themed issue. Sad that a magazine, supposedly devoted to rock music and the values behind it, prioritizes in this manner,

This is not the american version, for instance the "John Mayer's regrets" article has already been printed in a past issue of the US version. Also note that the numbering is way of compared to the US version and that the currency says something about NZ.

I'm getting him to scan it for me and I'll send the article this afternoon to Ozphoria so they can pass it on to everyone.!! :awklove:/>

They have a one paragraph review of Oceania of 3/5, and now BC is on the cover? This is consistent with their practice of pretending they love an album that's successful that got a bad review from them and vice versa (Zeitgeist got 4/5, but then they changed it on their website) and BC didn't get a "SP are back" back when...it happened. Now we're getting it when BC is the only original member because the album has actually been pretty successful. And it's a photo from the 90s? So silly.

Exactly. He is just a American elitist who thinks everything done in America is better than everything else.
BTW, Rolling Stone Australia has been around since 1972, only five years after the U.S. Version started. It is the longest running international edition of Rolling Stone. http://en.wikipedia....Stone_Australia

heh, well i'm actually not american but the Rolling Stone publication is an american invention documenting mainly US pop culture and politics. It has many international sister publications, most of which - as is clearly the case judging from the australian cover, translates and reprints articles from the US version with a few original pieces thrown in. I'm sorry but the US version is "Rolling Stone" the rest are just watered down copies that can't really match the effect that for instance a cover story from the US version can have on album sales.

Being on the cover in today's day in age where pop, country and dance music dominates the industry is good news for a band like SP.

The Aussie version tends to have musicians on their cover than the US version has in the past decade. This month Metallica is on the cover, the months before during this year featured Jack White, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Soundgarden, Florence and the Machine, and Radiohead. However, even with being the longest surviving international edition, its impact is minimal as they are more isolated and small in population. Hence the influence is not strong on a global scale, at least not enough to make a big impact for the band outside of Australia and New Zealand. Nevertheless it is still wonderful that they are featured, even if I think they should have used a contemporary photograph over a mid 90's photo, because I think it sends the wrong message.

I think it's an "Australia always stooges New Zealand tax"
oops yeah - I didn't do the calculation, but hey that means it cheaper here!
They've obviously used the photo for this Australia/NZ issue because of the upcoming tour, for a little promotion. I can only think that they used the 90's photo because of their 90's theme, and because the general music fan who knew of SP's fame in the 90's will recognise the 90's Billy more easily.
I don't listen to the radio here but I can't imagine them playing any Oceania songs. :rolleyes:/>

Man your post makes me laugh so much... Re-read it and realize how patronizing and "elistist" it sounds compared to the one of eyeboogers who probably meant "original" instead of "real".
FYI this summer in France we have Jack White on the RS cover. I'll check if there are SP news inside but I doubt it...

Hell no, not everyone is fluent around here. Obviously you've never been to France!
Well... everyone had to learn English at school but let's face it: we totally suck at speaking foreign languages, whatever they are. Even when we suceed in getting a sentence properly ordered, the accent ruins the whole thing. :p/>
I read somewhere that this may be due to the fact that our language is composed of sounds with very low frequencies compared to English. So basically our vocal cords lack practice.
But I do think the global level is increasing a little though. For instance a lot of people prefer now watching TV series in English (with the subtitltes in French, but still), which was not the case ten years ago. French bands (and rock bands in particular) also start to sing in English rather than in French, which used to be not really well received in the context of the fight for francophony and of the "cultural exception" concept.
Anyway what really got me into learning English was that I wanted soooo badly to understand what the rock bands frontmen were singing on the radio! And now I practice English on a daily basis at work, with foreign friends, and on this very forum. But I still make a lot of mistakes and I still learn new words everyday, especially slang. ;)/>

It's just that several words used in everyday life come from English terms such as: week end, interview, pull over/T-shirt, best-of/best-seller,...
Just like you use English words of French origin: rendez-vous, cliché, garage, and other things like that ;)/>.
