Does someone want to explain to me why the "acoustic mix" of Disarm has a grand total of 0% acoustic guitar in the song?

there's actually a lil' bit of electric guitar in the song when it starts and before each chorus.

No, what you're hearing is a 1943 Gibson mandolin, probably coupled with acoustic reverb; my best guess is Corgan played it in a spacious bathroom. To the untrained ear it does sound a lot like an electric guitar.

??? there have already been tons

EDITED TO ADD: there have been intermittent server problems over the past month. So if you go to spfc.org and the front page says it's running on the backup server, then the data may not be totally up to date. there have definitely already been substantial updates based on the reissues.

I'm mostly speaking about the info for each songs. I dont have them cause I have the vinyls.

Here, Fernando. I'll try to remember my ratings. The right ratings.

The Everlasting Gaze=8/10

Stand Inside Your Love=10/10
I of the Mourning=10/10
The Sacred and Profane=2/10
Try, Try, Try=10/10
Heavy Metal Machine=8/10
This Time=2/10
The Imploding Voice=8/10
Glass and the Ghost Children=2/10
Wound=6.5/10
The Crying Tree of Mercury=7/10
With Every Light=9/10
Blue Skies Bring Tears=7.5/10
Age of Innocence=10/10

Machina II

Glass' Theme=8/10
Cash Car Star=9/10
Dross=9/10
Real Love=10/10
Go=7.5/10
Let Me Give the World to You=10/10
Innosense=7/10
Home=9/10
Blue Skies Bring Tears=3/10
In My Body=8/10
If There Is a God=6.5/10
Atom Bomb=6/10

EDITED: Heavy Metal Machina gets an 8.

Meh. I mean you're right that S&P and This Time are the simplest songs on the album, but they are exceptionally well-built pop songs, in my opinion. They are songs you can feel extremely comfortable listening to, and still get something out of at the same time. Maybe the fact that they are not really challenging at all is not appealing to you. It is not always to me, either. But I feel like there is a time for exquisitely crafted "easy" music with a vibrant message. As for Glass and the Ghost Children, it is incredibly contrived and tacky, but, maybe even because of that, it is very unique and full of personality. And the drumming is some of my favourite on the album. There is no song on Machina I would give less than a 5, to be honest. I feel like your Machina II is pretty accurate, though, except I'd give Piano If There is a God 9/10, and Innosense like a 3/10.

You dare meh me?

I'm sure Corgan would argue the lyrics "save" the simple songs; he seems more self aware than most would credit him with being (myself included many times). I don't mean that to be condescending.

Anyway, I appreciate your thoughtful critique on Corgan's music. More like Dontgetangry and snail, please.

The DVD is great, long set, lots of Billy angst, quirky tid bits from James, etc. It's definitely a treat to watch, plus the shout out Billy made to his brother in the audience was sweet heheh. Plus it's fun to watch the band...Billy (or Fred, the evil twin) mainly...interact with the crowd, shows some of the humor behind their shows.

Let's hope they don't ruin the MCIS and Adore cover art in the reissues the same way they butchered the SD one.

^ I agree.

It makes sense to go with solid purple with Gish but it has no place on SD. That should have been all warm colors (mostly orange, of course).

But we're being graphics whores. It's all about the gameplay, amirite?

So my reissues came today. Really extremely impressed with the quality of the entire package. I would have easily paid twice as much as the Ł33.98 I paid for the pair.

As I expected the dvd is what shines most in this package. Yes the remastering is good, but I think the difference is noticeable more on Gish than on SD. Couple of nice tracks on disk 2 as well. But the dvd just blew me away.

Gish dvd is good in its own right, not as good as the SD one, but then its 3 years older so can't expect the quality to be as good. As a viewing experience it is pretty enjoyable though. They don't play Siva or Suffer, but there is the inclusion of Razor and Godzilla which are two of my fave pre Gish songs.

Got mines on the 6th there, been listening to them pretty heavily the past few days. That solo effect in the BBC Quiet demo is mental, I'm guessing it's some sort of harmonizer he's using with a slight detune applied to the effect but I'm just speculating could be totally wrong. Anyone got a better idea?

The reissues are excellent. The albums sound much more crisp and dynamic.

The extras are hit or miss, but when youve already released/leaked 300+ songs, its hard to have A+ gems sitting in the vault. Something I really like and wish they would do more of, is release acoustic tracks without other instruments/effects. The Spaceboy extra without the organs is vastly superior to the original imo. Apathys Last Kiss is fantastic. I hope moving forward that more of the extras are these types of remixes, rather than lo-fi demos.

Re:MCIS and this is personal opinion, while the material is great, I find the quality of the mixes and tones to be wildly erratic. Some tacks have great production values, others sound like demos. Jellybelly, despite being one of the albums best songs, sounds like a demo and is mixed way down. Bodies, Tales of a Scorched Earth, XYU sound demo'y and way too thin. Granted the production is part of the charm, but there is a great deal of thought into the production on the "hits" like Tonight, 1979, 33 etc. but a lot of the rock songs that were never destined to be more than album cuts, sound like they were afterthoughts. (Despite being the best songs on the album) MCIS doesnt need to be pristine like Siamese Dream, but it would be nice for the reissue, to offer a complete remix as well, instead of just a remaster. Hell, throw in a few more overdubs for good measure Billy! MCIS is a masterpeice, but ive always felt if the production values were up to Siamese Dream and Machina levels, it would have been even more epic.

I just received the reissue box set (CD's + DVD) in the mail yesterday and so far, I've very pleased. Ordered it from Amazon, after some customer no service from Topspin in the Gish order, and got it in just 2 days, and about 10 bucks less!

I've only had a chance to listen to Disc 1 so far, and I've got to say, there is something different there, at least IMO. I have my original issue CD from back in the day and this one does seem better. It's almost as if you can listen to it as loud as you like without the treble peaks tweaking at your eardrums. This is good to me, as I've probably done a Pete Townshend to my ears, over the years. I don't know exactly what Butch Vig (?) did in the remastering, but I like it.

I'm new here (been lurking for a few months) and didn't think this was worth starting a new thread for. I'm curious about some of the recording dates listed in the deluxe Siamese Dream booklet. "STP (Rehearsal demo)," "Luna (Apartment demo)," "Ache (Silverfuck rehearsal demo)" and "Rocket (Rehearsal demo)" are all listed as being recorded in 1991. Is that a typo or were all of those songs that old?

Wasn't Siamese released in 93? Why would 91 be surprising?

Since these are demos, it's not inconceivable. There were early demo sessions (which I don't think we have heard) for Adore back in 1996 for example. "Rocket" and "Silverfuck" were performed live (early versions) as early as 1991. If you look up the bootleg Daydream Kisses or just look for the show, that was performed on December 12, 1991, you will see both of those songs performed, along with "Drown" (which wouldn't be released itself until 1992). About a year later, they started recording Siamese Dream if I'm not mistaken. In the liner notes for SD I think it says December 1992-March 1993.

Some bands write songs ages before they're released, like some songs from In Utero by Nirvana originated in 1990/1991 and weren't recorded for an album until 1993.

So, if a person wanted to listen to the tracks on the bonus disc in chronological order does this look right?

Luna (Apartment demo) (Recorded by Billy Corgan, Chicago 1991)
STP (Rehearsal demo) (Recorded by Billy Corgan, Chicago, 1991)

Something like that. Though we don't know in what order the Siamese Dream acoustic/instrumental mixes were recorded. If you wanted to go in track order for those, you would do Today, Disarm, Soma, Spaceboy.

Question about the remixes ("Pissant" and "Apathy's Last Kiss") on the bonus disc, am I just not paying attention or are they pretty much identical to the originally released versions?

Also, was the originally released version of "Hello Kitty Kat" an edit of the version on the bonus disc or are they completely different takes?

Apathy's Last Kiss is significantly different. That awful warble effect on the guitar is missing, making it a much more enjoyable song. Haven't listening to Pissant in a while, so can't say on that.

SD Pissant is supposedly a rough mix, but I agree that it 's practically identical to the PI version. As for HKK, i'm almost 100% they are different takes. I guess it's possible that it's a rough take they built upon much like they did for some of the MCIS songs.
