Lucky ones who are going to attend the show in Paris on wednesday :

  • Let's chat here to see if we can set something before going there. (clap, cheers, banners, photos, meet up, anything...)
  • Let's post here a review after the show and discuss :clap:/> :sarcastic:/> :ras:/>

The Zenith is a venue designed for up to 6500 spectators. I hope the place will be crowded and I hope everyone is going to rawk' on ! :buttrock:/>

Look for the red haired girl with black earrings and probably some extra energy :happy:/>

Ive always wanted to watch a band at the Zenith ever since I watched the live DVD of Muse playing there during their Origins/Hullabaloo tour.

The Zenith is a great concert place dedicated to Rock Music.
The atmosphere and sound are both excellent there. My only fear is that the place be half empty (given the news concerning the german performances).

By the way tomorrow night Alice Cooper will be heating up this very stage for the Pumpkins. Funny hey ?

Wow I feel a little lonely around here... Hardly one post in one day !

I know I have to the energy of a raging bull but I would have loved to share it with others and set the concert place on fire.
Isn't there a single person but me in this forum who is going to attend the show in Paris. :unsure:/>

Hi Sophie,

I wish I could come on the forum earlier, but it was so difficult for me to register (because of the very old version of internet explorer at work, and I managed to come thanks to my cellphone).

I'll be there at the concert at the Zenith tonight, and I'm so happy to attend this show!
The last (and first) time I saw the Pumpkins, was in oct 2000, in Angers (City in the midwest of France).
It was amazing. I wish I could go to others show in France but I couldn't...

When I first saw the setlist of the new tour, I was full of joy!
Soma, Silverfuck, Obscured, For Martha, Pissant, Siva, Frail and Bedazzled, Muzzle....

I'm so excited for tonight. Just a bit sad they'll be not playing Obscured anymore (it's my favorite song).
But however, I'm sure it'll be fine!!

I will go to the show with my fine, who only knows the hits, so she might be disappointed.
But who knows...

Bye, and have a great concert!! :-)

My previous post is full of typing mistakes...
I don't know how to correct it, I don't see any 'modify' option anywhere.

However, I meant 'wife' and not 'fine'... :/

I wanted to add that I really enjoy the new songs, especially 'Pale horse' and 'Pinwheels'.
Oceania will certainly be a great album.

Hey Galapogos !

I'm really excited to hear that some other forum friends will attend the show tonight. We'll be able to discuss the show when it is over, that will be great !!

I am also really excited by the setlist. They may not play Obscure anymore but if the atmosphere is great we might win Zero as an encore which excites me even more. I hope you and your wife are going to help me to set the place on fire in order to make that happen. :buttrock:/> (a special thought here for LostSoul)
I want a great show, I'm overexcited (I have written that word too many times in one sentence, did you get that I am really excited ? ;)/>) !

I'm going there tonight with a friend of mine who hardly knows the Pumpkins (or maybe just BWBWings and 1979 maybe), I hope the show will be like a slap in the face for him. I have plenty of materials to lend him after the performance so he can dive into the Pumkins music afterwards.

I've already written a lot concerning the new songs from Oceania, you might have read them on the "Songs & lyrics" topics, but basically I am already a fan contrary to the latest material released before that.

I have several goals for tonight :
- Singing louder than Billy on TTEORuby, Silverfuck, Muzzle, Cherub rock... because these are ones of my fav'
- Not crying when I'll listen to Pale horse because it is what I have done so far...
- Keeping an eye on the latest members of the band because I've never seen them on stage (not even Jeff, I let things go during the Zeitgeist era to be honest. This is a pity because I used live between Paris and Poitiers at the time, we could have met at the concert in Angers !!)
- Trying to take beautiful pictures (I'm afraid cameras are not allowed in the concert place but I'll try to bring one anyway because I always see plenty of peolple with one and nothing ever happens to them)
- Bringing back the actual setlist, write a review
- And above all making the band feel like they want to come back to France next year.

I've hardly slept more than 3 hours a day in the last few days because of my work. Actually I'm so tired that I have the soft melody of Soma in my head since this morning. (One last kiss for me...yeah. One last kiss good night :sleeping:/> )I think I'll try to sleep a little in front of my computer before the show, otherwise I won't make it anyway. So if I do not die being utterly exhausted before the show even begins, tonight is going to be the big release of all my contained energy. The minute the doors of the Zenith open I know I'll be at the top.

If you see a 30 year old red haired girl with black earrings, come and say hello, I'll buy you and your wife an overcharged beer in a plastic cup :cheers:/>.
I'll be at the metro station Porte de Pantin on line 5 at 7PM sharp (I wanted to be there earlier but my friend can't and I have his ticket, grr...).

Thank you Sophie for your kindness :happy:/>
It would be great indeed if we meet tonight...
By the way, if you want to find us, the best way is to look for a tall white guy, with a small black woman (1,50m). ;-)
I don't know how many people will be there, but I feel sad that the venue is not sold out.
They made such beautiful music in the past (from Gish to MCIS especially), that I don't understand why people who like the SP during the 90's won't come tonight. And to me, 45 euros is not so expensive for a 2 hours show, full of good old music...

I'm angry against myself cause I forgot my camera this morning.
I still have my phone to take photos but its not so good...

I'm so excited to know that I'll hear songs like Starla or Thru the Eyes of Ruby tonight. :lol:/>
I'm crossing fingers for Zero as well.

Have a good sleep, and I hope to see you tonight!
Nicolas

WAOW!! I've just come back from the show and just... WAOW!!

I'm going to write a longer review soon because I have plenty of things to tell you but I just wanted to say that the band knocked me off my feet and that the atmospshere was really intense. I feel like I am floating out of my body.

I didn't manage to meet Nicolas and his wife because we were almost 5000 in there!! (The venue was actually almost sold out)
Nevertheless I will definitely plan things properly to meet other fans during next shows (and I'll keep a spare room for ItsSoPringles & Space_Dementia so thay can come and see the Zenith ;)/> ) ...because yes the band said they will come back next year !

http://i42.tinypic.com/ngo9b9.jpg

But by now I just need some sleep and I'll tell you all the details (not sparing any) tomorrow morning over more than 3 hours straight of deep sleep at last... :sleeping:/>

Just a quick answer and I go to bed because it is already a quarter to 3 AM here and I have to go to work tomorrow...

Well the setlist was exactly the same as in Amsterdam (with the same encore : Zero and BWBW), but Billy was quite talkative tonight, he introduced the band and told us stories about him & the venue (apparently he used to come to the Zenith as a spectator. I'll tell you this in details tomorrow). That seems new compared to the previous shows. :happy:/>

It is good to know that he was being talkative. That was a big criticism from some fans and the critics. Thanks, looking forward to the review. Have a goodnight.

Hi everyone,

Here's a little report of yesterday's concert.
The first part was assured by 'Ringo Death Starr', a band from Austin (Texas). They arrived at 8:15 PM I think. They were three: a guitarist, a drummer, and a bassist woman who sang also sometimes. It was sounding like shoegazing music, recalling My bloody valentine, Jesus and Mary Chains, and even Slowdive sometimes. The music itself was not so bad, but the noise of the guitar effects was too high to be able to enjoy the music. Their set lasted 45 minutes, but it gave the impression it was a 2h set (pretty boring).

The Smashing Pumpkins arrived at 9:15 PM. Billy and all the others member together, not Billy coming in last position, to be acclaimed more than the others, as it happen sometimes. The setlist was the same than in Brussels and Amsterdam, with Zero and BWBW composing the encore.
The first great moment of the evening, to me, was Starla. What a pleasure it was to hear it live!! I really loved the soft part in the middle before the ending solo. Then Geek USA, very nice. I had goomps on Muzzle, and I nearly cried when he sang 'and the world that you can live withoooout..." (I really love this line).
The Oceania/TBK songs were logically less well received than the older ones, because people didn't know already these songs. However, people seemed to like Pinwheels and Pale Horse. 'Frail and bedazzled' was a highlight to me, with Billy singing a capella at the end of the song, just before playing again. The enchainement of Frail and Bedazzled with Silverfuck was a bit too fast in my opinion. Silverfuck was for sure a highlight of the show, with everybody singing 'Baby you're dead... hole in your head'... People must have felt embarrassed at the end of the song, when Billy told Mike to stop immediately, with a angry face, when Mike had started something. I've never seen Billy like this but it was really frightening... Thru the eyes of Ruby was my favorite moment yesterday, it was so good hearing it live and to sing along with Billy 'The night has come to hold us young'...
Cherub Rock was good. I'm not fond of Owata and My love is winter. Neither of Oceania. These songs were the lowest points of the show, in my opinion. 'For Martha' was great, Mike played the intro with a soft sound of keyboard. I think it would have sound better with a piano sound, but however it was great.

But for many people, the best moment of the show was the encore (Zero/Bullet). When the band returned, Billy thanked the audience, who was really enthousiastic yesterday. He told that Paris was one of the most beautiful city of the world, and asked each member of the group, what do they prefer, between Paris and Los Angeles. They all answered Paris. Then Billy told a guy or a girl in the front row, that he/she can come suck his deck after the show (!!!)./ A joke I guess, I was a bit stunned by this actually... He announced then that the Oceania album would be releasedd in March 2012, and they will come back in Europe then. Then they launched Zero, which was very welle received buy the audience. But obviously, 'Bullet' was the song the most well received. It was funny when the intro of BWBW was stopped... then silence... then 'the world is a vampire' and the song to be continued, with the audience very receptive. At the end of the song, Billy asked the crowd to sing, and everybody was singing 'Despite all my rage...'. A very good moment, and to me, it was the hightlight of the show.

Sorry Sophie, I didn't find you yesterday. Nex time I hope we'll meet.
The Zenith was nearly full, even if it was not sold out.
In conclusion, it was a very good concert, a 2h show, and the inclusion of Zero instead of Pissant
was a good idea, for those who wanted hits.

Hi every one, I had promised you a review of the show in Paris so here it is.

The devil Pumkins are definitely back in ! Owata a crazy night it was on November 9th in Paris.

At 9PM the Zenith was crowded with nearly 5000 overexcited fans of the band urging its members to perform by shouting out loud and clapping their hands. Suddenly a black curtain fell, the lights on the psychedelic daisies in the back were turned on and the super powerful combination of Quasar and Panopticon started. That was just awesome ! To give you a hint of the atmosphere at that point -which was only the very beginning of the show-: some guys were already crowdsurfing, and plastic cups were flying in the air! Can you believe this! Then Starla began ; the oldest fans joined the group, banging their heads here and there, and an energy explosion happened on Geek USA. (God I actually loved the USA for providing us such great bands at that point). Billy's solo was incredible.

On Muzzle there were lots of vocals in the crowd, me included. You'd thought that the lives of all the Pumkins fans have been extraordinary blessed and cursed and won…
After that the show went on with a succession of cool and strong tunes (Window Paine, Lightning strikes, Soma and Siva) I really loved the Lightning strikes live version without the keyboard part that I am not really fond of on the album version. At the end of it thunder filled the air, it was easy but funny. Soma was really beautiful and Billy's voice was still there, for sure. During Siva Billy had a great stage presence, with his head going forward and backward, pointing at the audience, crossing his wrist and so on. It felt like he really wanted to get there faster.

To be honest Oceania didn't receive a welcome as warm as the other Oceania songs but it was scheduled at the right moment (at last some relief) and I happened to enjoy the kind of shoegazing parts of it. It was the most avant-garde part of the show and honestly I didn't expect to appreciate it that much. The band members seemed to be drifted away imperceptibly out of this world and time, it was a very poetic moment in the show.

With Frail and Bedazzled we were back on earth and then we had a super powerful version of Silverfuck,. The band and the crowd were so into it. I felt like Billy had plugged himself on power supply. He even sticked out is tongue out due to exhaustion at the end of it and smiled which was really cool. He tried to interact a little with the audience during the bang-bang part having the people at right side of the stage shouting "Bang-bang you're dead" whereas the left side answered "Hole in your head". I couldn’t help but get into it and once again Billy's voice impressed me, especially in the whining parts of the song.

A stupid man ruined my Pale horse moment. I told him what I had in mind and hopefully he left me appreciate the end of it. When the "Please come back" moment came I blew a kiss towards the sky for Martha of course but also for all the ones I know and love who are up there I guess. It was a very fragile moment. Then Pinwheels started and the audience gave it some credit. I personally loved the sound of the Gretsch on that tune and its efficient riff.

I wouldn't have missed Thru the eyes of Ruby played lived for anything in the whole world. This song and the way it was performed were just perfection to me. Billy and the crowd singing together "The night has come to hold us young" was a very powerful instant that just blew my mind. Exactly like the following Cherub rock which left me ecstatic.

More recent stuff for the end of the show with Owata and My love is winter. These are more groovy tunes (especially Owata) and the crowd seemed to like them as much as I did. I liked the new version of my love is winter. I'm glad I heard it live, it helped me to set my mind on which version I prefer. It's probably the next hit of the band as the crowd sang together with Billy.
For those who wonder Billy sang "Oh Chicago, look what you've done, look what what you've done to me / Oh Gay Pairee (Paris) I'm coming home, I'm coming home to you" on Owata.

For Martha closed the setlist with Mike on the mellotron which was a surprise for me. For Martha performances are always deep and emotional, it was also the case on that particular evening. At the end of it the band left the stage and there were applause, whistles and shouts for what seemed to last an eternity to me and hopefully the encore began.

Billy came back on stage and thanked us for the warm welcome, and said some nice things about the people and the city. Then he introduced the band and told us Oceania will be released on march 2012 if everything goes well (damn I hope the release date will not be postponed again, I can't wait to hold this CD in my hands). Then he told us that he used to come to the Zenith as a spectator and he remembered that particular time In 1992 when he came to see "Les Rita Mitsouko" and he was impressed by the short-sized lead-singer (well Catherine Ringer is indeed not very tall. By the way RIP Fred Chichin). He also promised that the band will come back next year and I sincerely hope they will.

And rock music started again with Zero. The fans did wanna go for a ride and people were just bouncing everywhere. I let you imagine how the show ended with Bullet with butterfly wings : it was just pure delirium in the pit.

I've just detailed you the setlist but there were also really special moments all along the performance like solos between Jeff and Billy both facing each other. Mike also had his moment and really surprised me. That man is without any doubt a terrific drummer. His face was not as expressive as Jimmy's but he's really talented and proved that he could deal with emotions either with his drums or with a keyboard on For Martha. I may be wrong but I felt like the band was exhausted but nevertheless had some great time on stage. Only Nicole seemed a little dreamy from time to time, but her playing was awesome and you can see that sha has been active during the elaboration of the new songs. I also liked that moment when several men were crowdsurfing really close to the stage and Billy glanced at Jeff with a "What the heck?? " look on his face and both smiled. You could se the rapport they had.

Well I could talk to you for hours concerning that shows but I will now end this review by saying that the Pumkins are definitely back in, that the new material is amazing, that their stage presence is still here and that they are better than never musically speaking. Their sound is their own, and it feels so good to see band members who can actually play their instruments so well and try new experiments on stage. Go and see them live with no hesitation and enjoy a pure musical moment !

PS: I have nice pics to share with you guys. Soon...

That did happen during the gig.
Actually I think it is part of the show :drama:/> . Billy also started to yell at one guy in the audience for no reason, just like he did in Stockholm.
And when he offered oral sex to that guy at the end it must have been because the man couldn't stop shouting his name or something similar, I couldn't hear what the guy was saying. I found it funny (rock star attitude :buttrock:/> ).
I know BIlly was not really angry or something, otherwise he wouldn't have given the guy and his friends a bunch of guitar picks before leaving the stage. (I wish I could have grabbed one, damn ! :cry:/> )

And I really had the feeling that there was a special connexion between Billy and Mike. He is not only his protégé it seems deeper than this.

eeer... were you in the front rows? because I was. And I can tell you that Billy was really furious at the guy in the crowd: the guy was indeed shouting his name and giving him the finger (don't have to tell you which one) and even if I can understand this can be infuriating, Billy's behaviour was to me unacceptable and unprofessional. As a matter of fact, Billy shouted at the guy twice during the gig ('Fuck you' and 'You motherfucker').

I do not think screaming at Mike is a part of the show (what a strange idea!). Mike made a slight mistake at the end of Silverfuck if I remember well, and Billy turned towards him and shouted "NO!" in his face. Mike was dumbfounded: I really felt uncomfortable for the poor guy who was thus humiliated in front of 6000 people. This was unprofessional too.

On the whole, I thought there was no good vibe coming from the band during this concert: Billy was angry, Nicole looked - and that's the least I can say - annoyed by being there, Jeff did his job but no more...
It was great to listen to old songs from Gish, Siamese Dream and Pisces, but the new songs are just... mediocre.

I had wanted to love this concert and I left with a strange feeling, as if I had realised that the Smashing Pumpkins really died in 2000. And I think they did.

Well I didn't meant all this was intended. I'm just saying that it may be just a rockstar attitude, it spices up a little the atmosphere. To me it's just a way to gain presence on stage. I think the man that pointed his finger towards Billy just threw him a line. Honestly, what did he expect. I'm quoting Billy here "It is a childish idea that I must be in a good mood on stage. Of course I want people to have it nice. But I do not think people come to see me be nice…".
Concerning Mike I thought that it might have been a way to maintain the "I am a dictatorial band leader" thing, but I may be wrong. I felt a lot of people in the crowd really enjoyed Mike's performance anyway (you could tell by the cheerings at the end of the show).
I agree with you on Nicole though, I said dreamy in my review not to say bored... I guess it is because the band was exhausted by the former gigs. I would have really enjoyed a bass solo which never came. Finally as far as Jeff is concerned, he is not a very expressive person anyway.

I'm sorry you din't enjoy the new material. I personally think it is really better than the former releases like TbK. Not a chance to see you at the next performance then. It's a shame we could have discussed a little.

Thanks a bunch Sophie, Galapagos and Johnthe Trickster for the reviews, Great two of you had a wonderful time. Interesting to see these different takes on what happened.
We might get a video of that angry billy - mike moment... hope to see it. Anyway, I for one feel the new (oceania) songs are seriously amazing. The show in Brussels was e.g. that good that i'm seriously considering going to another show, maybe the luxembourg one

Or you may be totally right, except that I don't think it's a sham: that's how Corgan is. I'll give a listen to Oceania, of course, and perhaps will I see the band again when they come back to Paris, hoping I will love the gig. It's a hard life, being a SP fan.

I'm brand new here on the forum... not a brand new fan though. I was at Le Zénith two days ago... and you might be happy to know that I recorded the gig and it sounds just great!! I'm in the process of uploading it as mp3 files on box.net (so that you'll be able to listen to each song individually before downloading if you want) and I'll upload it tonight on the archive as lossless files. Hope you'll love it and give plenty of comments!!

You nailed this recording. Came over here to post a comment after grabbing it from over there. Very well done!

Personally I think Flac16 as another option might be good for those wanting to burn CDs but I'm cool w/ 24bit :)/>

It's true maybe I should have uploaded the files at 16 bits for those who would like to burn the show... but this can easily be done with a music converter. Thanks for your comment and the video. It's really cool as I didn't video tape anything at this concert

I linked the show to 1000 people on my twitter and on the SP tour blog (about 10 000 readers). Hope that is ok haha ;)/> It's a great recording! I noticed a lot of variations in the songs - especially Silverfuck. It's really great to hear :)/>

Hi there ! I'm back from my (bank holiday+week end) journey.

First of all I would like to send a big/huge/gigantic thanks to the ones who have recorded the show (audio and video), aleruty and Copperpo5.
I've just downloaded it and it is pure wonder, so thanks again (so many good memories + I just love the live recordings of the tunes).

Then I wanted to tell you that I yielded to temptation and bought tickets (+train tickets+hotel room) for the show in Luxemburg !!!
I'm already in contact with some other SP fans who could'nt resist taking another dosing of the SP (hello there agent_cooper :happy:/>).
To celebrate this great decision I've made, I'm wearing a stripped shirt this morning. :blush:/>

Are there other fans in this forum who are going to do the same. Maybe we could meet up and discuss a little before and after the gig ?

Thanks, at least this way if no one tapes the London show I'll have this as a keepsake.
