Since Billy and many here agree that Oceania is like all the other SP styles put into a soup, I thought it would be fun to say what pre-Oceania Smashing Pumpkins songs we think are the most similar to the Oceania songs. This could be determined by any number of categories (style, arrangements, time changes, tempo, etc), just not quality--a great song on Oceania might resemble a crummy SP song the most. I'm particularly interested in seeing which song comparisons get the most general consensus and which generate the most disparate results. Also, no cheating (Zwan, TFE, etc).

I'm pretty confident that some of my comparison choices will be the most popular, but some of these songs are just about downright impossible to compare to the rest of the SP catalogue.

Here's my list. I haven't thought about this very much, so I'm hoping to get some "Why didn't I think of that?" from other lists.

Quasar - Cherub Rock
Panopticon - Stand Inside Your Love or Lightning Strikes
The Celestials - Thru the Eyes of Ruby
Violet Rays - Stand Inside Your Love or Disarm
My Love is Winter - That's the Way (My Love Is)
One Diamond, One Heart - Cupid de Locke
Pinwheels - Spaceboy or Pomp and Circumstances
Oceania - Porcelina of the Vast Oceans
Pale Horse - The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete or Tom Tom
Chimera - Rocket
Glissandra - Appels + Oranjes
Inkless - Today or Mayonaise
Wildflower - Shame or Pomp and Circumstances

Panopticon, Celestials sound like TBK to me.
Violet Rays and Oceania sound alike.
Oceania track sounds like Pink Floyd, SP and Batman.
Glissandra sounds like a MBV rip but with more pop.
My Love is Winter sounds like Arms of sleep.
One Diamond like Future Embrace.
Pinwheels=Zwan.
Pale Horse=Adore.
Chimera sounds like a Gish and Siamese Dream baby,
Quasar sounds like GLOW with a hint of Geek U.S.A,
Inkless sounds very unique and it holds its own:
(Zwan,Adore,Starla,Medicine:YourHighness mix)
Wildflower is sweet but depressing.

I hope SP dint try to sound like SP on purpose. (its a real turn off)
The most promising of all songs in the direction they are going are all the tracks
except for Wildflower & Pale Horse. (the sound dint click for me but the lyrics did)The noise on those two was too depressing.

for me, the songs are nearly all just combos of two different songs. It's like, Quasar for instance, it has the intensity of Geek, but the message of Astral, hence Astral Planes done right :)/>. Not saying they're unoriginal at all, it's BC so it'll sound like it's BC. It makes me like the songs more, because they sound more genuine.

Quasar - Geek/Astral
Panopticon - Rocket/Lightning
The Celestials - Disarm/Tom Tom
Violet Rays - this is one that doesn't remind me of anything.
My Love is Winter - That's the Way (My Love Is)/Stand Inside Your Love
One Diamond, One Heart - this one too.
Pinwheels - just reminds me of MCIS era all together
Oceania - Ruby/Rotten Apples
Pale Horse - Once Upon a Time/Shame/overall very Adore-esque
Chimera - Zwan, just Zwan.
Glissandra - TFE
Inkless - Hummer/Today and for some reason Pretty, Pretty Star
Wildflower - Soot and Stars/Blank Page

These are good observations--in each case, it's the instrumentation/sounds that's very similar, though they're very different in other respects. I also agree that Violet Rays was extremely difficult to pin down.

Glissandra really does sound a lot like Appels + Oranjes, now that you mention it. There's also a bit of Daphne Descends in there, at least the riff, anyway.

Quasar reminds me of Geek USA, though I think someone already mentioned that.

One Diamond One Heart reminds me of Luna, lyrically, anyway. And both songs give me a warm, fuzzy feeling when I listen to them, but I guess that's not really a valid comparison.
