Watching the band implode at the L.A. Forum when I was a wee pup! D'Arcy threw a cup of water at Billy and walked off stage?

Los Angeles Forum, Mellon Collie tour, I'd guess around '97. I had nosebleed seats, but I vividly remember D'Arcy hurling a cup of water at Billy before walking off stage in the middle of the encore. I remember at the time sensing the tension the entire show, even from that far away. It finally melted down. It affected me, even as a kid. Is that weird or what?

Was anyone else there?

Anyway, this is my first post, so I thought I'd start with something personal and say hello. Just a random memory! :cheers:/>

That most likely never happened. You may have either imagined it or you did not observe the incident correctly, being in nosebleed seats.

I am listening to the recording of Silverfuck from the show right now and D'Arcy is audibly playing bass up until the very end of the song. She did not storm off.

That's interesting. Maybe she did it after the song was over? I don't know, but I know I'm not imagining things! (Or am I?) :whattodo:/>

Now I feel strange! Can I trust myself? :eyebrow:/>

I remember being 13 years old and hearing that show being promoted on KROQ. I wanted to go so bad. I fell in love with the band when Mellon Collie came out. Sadly I didn't get to see them for the first time till 98. Completely different band by then.

From a Billy Corgan interview with Playboy

Quote

You realize that they're as stupid as you thought they were. They're just confirming it. And I know they're thinking the same thing about me. The Smashing Pumpkins is just like a family. Not everyone gets along, not everybody's cool with one another all the time. We get under one another's tits. D'Arcy has even given me the finger onstage and told me to go fuck myself. And I've told her to get the fuck offstage. We're just being ourselves. If you were in a band with people long enough, you'd tell them to go fuck themselves, too. It's inevitable. And the next day we're back to normal. I think it's healthy.

Yes, I believe something like that happened during the Arising Tour--someone can clarify, I'm sure--but not apparently at the date Modern Man is describing.

Takes a special personality to tell a guy who claims to have seen something with his own eyes that he didn't see it, especially when he was there. It may not have happened before the song was over, but if I were a gambling man, I would bet that Darcy threw a cup at Billy in LA on the Infinite Sadness Tour.

memory is horribly fallible. Especially memories from childhood. People very often build memories that are NOT accurate.

in the case of Pumpkins shows, there is a lot of documentation online pertaining to their live shows. So when someone claims to have heard/seen something that doesn't match the known information about that show, they're obviously wrong. They have an inaccurate memory.

When they were playing for the first time in Brazil (96) something like that also happened. D'arcy walked off stage and Billy grabbed her arm and brought her back to the stage.

Maybe it was Pittsburgh? It's been a long time but I was just listening to the show today. There is a part where Billy keeps screwing up the lyrics to "Dross", laughing in between and then says 'sorry, that was very unprofessional'. What D'arcy does next is sort of funny, but you can almost tell there is some tension there. She chides him saying 'Rock 'n' Roll, it's all about being professional...HA!'. Now my memory is fallible too, but I seem to recall reading fan accounts where she was annoyed that Billy couldn't get the words right even though he had them right in front of him. I also seem to recall reading(and again I could be wrong, it's been 13 years) that while a fan was waiting outside for them near their tour bus, D'arcy basically threatened to quit the band.

Netphoria archives seem to corroborate that there was at least talk about this sort of thing happening: http://www.netphoria...s_april1999.htm

We had also briefly documented these reports on Landslide back in the day but all I have is one line in April 1999 that it was overheard that she threatened to quit during the Pittsburgh show: http://landslide.200...meline99-00.htm

Darcy sounds like a big baby.

I've got a recording of XYU from back in the day where she comes out to play and just knocks the microphone down.
Maybe all these incidents are during that time of the month, lol.

Wasn't that the time she apologised sincerely for playing a gig sponsored by a cigarette company, only to have Billy wander up to the mike and thank said company for (I think) the inflatable balls that the crowd were punting around? Billy has proved many a time that he has a twisted sense of humour; I don't think D'arcy really got it, but that didn't stop him winding her up.
