I probably started the whole USB thing with one of my earlier posts. As breathesgelatin said, the reason I included it as an option in one of my scenarios was that while everyone assumes that delivery digital music via download is cheaper, unless the online infrastructure to deliver that music securely already exists *and is available to this project*, it may in fact be cheaper to buy a bunch of USB sticks in bulk and have interns stuff envelopes. I think most people just care about getting the songs digitally as cheaply as possible, but this is presumably why you're running a survey. If you really want people to give input on which delivery method makes the most sense, you need to provide us with cost numbers for each method.

I'm not really big on vinyl considering I'm 19. But if that's what the community wants, so be it. I'd rather see a CD as a physical release, but that's just me.

How about two USB drives instead?

If the vinyl + USB package was $28 and a vinyl + digital download package was $22 I would get the digital copy.

And, if people are worried about external hard drives dying, why don't they do backups? That's what people do with important files.

interesting. but I done think that exact thing would work well for sp trying to sell several several things each year. this article does make me realize a hope/fear about the archive project: please, if you want to put out special record players and art books, PLEASE let all the music be available at an affordable price.

I really only want CD. But if things are released on vinyl, then having a USB packaged with it would be nice. Or a download included with purchase of the vinyl would be good too.

I agree. I have no use for vinyl. If I can put a CD in my car and the music on my iPod I'm all set.

Same here. That's why I didn't buy any physical releases of TbK, it came with vinyl and I didn't feel like paying extra for something I was never going to use.

However, this could all change if I knew what I was actually buying.

Don't compare Appels + Oranjes
She is offering new material that is most likely A grade music.
The things in the archive will be full of a lot of gray area. Some gems I am sure. But plenty of gray area where songs might not be all that good.

What I do like though is that she did raise so much money. for just 1 record. that there is pretty amazing that people have supported her.

slap a usb in some sort of box about the size of a jewel case, but a little thicker so the usb can fit this way those who buy usb are getting their "jewel case" with cover art.

is there a way we could start with the gems? that way if the project ends before everything is out, we only miss the grey area and below stuff.

One man's trash is another man's treasure. Who decides what is a gem and what isn't? I think if it were that clear-cut (ha!), the material would have been released already.

Exactly. There's got to be a balanced picture painted by the project here. Of course, I get - money is a driver, but there's elements of artistry* and history (art history) which I hope will be considered by those picking the material for release [is it us or them? - I have lost track]; it also why I would have though a catalogue would be crucial to informing a long-term strategy of releases? I'm not sure how, for example, you could set up a subscription model / paid membership into a hub or whatnot, to keep the project rolling / self sufficient - without knowing the quantity and quality of the material. I guess this is why apparently the kickstart, release one thing at a time, model seems to me to be being talked about / favoured more than others. Unless those WilyKit and Kats in the Lucky 13 build in the running cost of a [central hub] into each release...

[*Purely, purely selfishly I hope that there's a couple of musicians involved who know drums. REALLY know them. Give me one dvd from, say, late MCIS or late 2000 tour with one multi-angle option for on JC alone. And i'd die happy. Hopefully their ear would be perfectly attuned to the genius of JC's live nuances. But that is my pure pipe dream...]

+1
JC's style is what inspired me to become a drummer, and he'll always be on a pedestal as my favorite

He's on many people's pedestals... I trust the Lucky 13 won't over-look the fact that there's a really large audience out there for JC's drumming; Just take a look at the vid he did for DW a year ago on youtube; 100,000 people have watched this... in rough comparison the official vid for Owata only clocks in at 30,000.

Was referring more to unreleased demos/full length Pastichio tracks, but yes, this also applies since it is getting released separately.

If there is anything that could command donations from people, it is older Smashing Pumpkins material. How much money are we even needing here? Even a quarter or less of what she raised would seem to me to be pretty good. I took the survey, and having to input dollar amounts for single songs has got me worried. I'm not going to pay a dollar for a song. No way. I don't think you should underestimate the desirability of old SP rarities, especially if there were special rewards for donations and good packaging of a box set or vinyl or whatever.

the survey NEVER asked how much would you pay for a single song. It asked about how you'd be willing to spend on ONE LIVE SHOW(2-3hr), TWO-LIVE-SHOW(4-6hr),ONE RELEASE PACKAGE 60-80 min, TWO-RELEASE 120-160 min, ONE VIDEO RELEASE.

I have a request for the Lucky 13 people. With *all* future SPRC releases, unless it's otherwise obvious (such as with a particular album reissue), then *please* specify which era songs come from. That probably seems like a real minor thing...but it's not.

Because I have nothing to play it on and it would just take up unnecessary space in my home. I have no interest in the format.

Why do people actually want to be mailed a fucking USB drive when you can just get the damn songs in the same format right off the internet?

How about you download the fuckin' songs, go out to shoppers drug mart, buy a USB, and fucking draw an SP heart on it. Jesus fuck.

Very true...even more impressive when you consider JC has kept a very low profile since leaving Smashing Pumpkins. Speaking of pipe dreams, isolated camera for every member would be cool. I've always been interested in comparing how Billy plays guitar versus how James plays guitar.

This is the future, most people get their music from a USB drive. I can not get my own because it doesn't come from Billy.

This is the future, most people get their music from a USB drive. I can not get my own because it doesn't come from Billy.

No one I know has ever purchased a USB drive with music files on it when other formats were available. I know many people, and I am involved in the music scene in chicago. People choose fucking Cassettes over USB drives. They can just offer the goddamn files for much cheaper over the internet and it's the same shit.

Also, what the fuck do you even do with a USB? You fucking plug it in, rip the files, then leave it gather dust and never use it again. It's fucking pointless and unnessicary

Yes, because all the files on this USB will have been hand-copied-across by Billy himself, and then signed before being sent out? :scatch:/>

It's already been said that USB's may actually be cheaper than file hostings. So think with your heads folks.

Keep in mind that for several weeks the video was only available on Yahoo! Music, where it was premiered. The YouTube view count isn't much to go by.

views do not equal sales. So it's a misleading number.

Not necessarily. If you calculate the power alone to keep a server running for an indefinite amount of time vs. uploading a cheap Chinese USB one time, it may be close. Plus, a server needs maintenance, upgrading, housing, etc. If you were to upload a 128kbs album onto a USB vs housing FLACS on servers the USB's would probably win.

Don't get me wrong, It's probably unlikely and I don't really care either way, but don't dismiss one over the other without careful consideration.
