Billy writing a song about his mother, and, death, but not her death, just don't makes senses....

I forgot that songs have to be about only one thing... and that sarcasm needs a font.

It's cool.

I don't really feel like dissecting a song I don't even like on a such a bland album. I haven't even listened to it since the first week it was out. Yawwwwnnnnnn. Here's hoping the next one is better.

No, just a long time fan that's dissappointed with the new stuff. It just doesn't have the heart or teeth that the older material had. Live they're a decent band, but it's definitely lacking that intangible ingredient.

I hate to be the jaded fan that goes, "blah blah blah the old days were so much better..." but, ya know, the old days were sooo much better.

There's a few new songs that still resonate with me, but they don't get released (ARB, Gossamer). Go figure.

^^THIS pretty much proves muh point, imo, b/c it seems as though its been very fashionable for quite some to demote the new material by comparing it to the old shit. I also find it highly inappropriate that you'd stoop so low as to insult the song itself just b/c your idea was contested. If you want to be acrimonious about a difference of opinion, that's fine, but don't try to play it out as if it didn't matter to you and then instead of directing your opprobriousness towards me, you do it towards the song we were discussing. That's very mature, lol.

And don't let your status as a long time fan delude you into thinking there's some especial entitlement to say whatever the fuck you please, and generally be disrespectful. I have been listening to SP quite a long time myself, about 15 years, and I'm 29 now, so about half of my life I've had to invest as much emotion and fondness for the early years as much as anyone else, and I think Oceania is the best thing the band has released and wish them good luck in one-upping it: b/c I love Oceania(do you hear me?); I FUCKIN' LOVE IT!!!!!!

It is absurd to me, how so many so-called and artistically observant fans will point to the old material as a whole, and say, "Billy, the new music is sub-par. Why u no write like u used to?!", but fail to acknowledge the fact that none of the albums sound like the prior one, and over the years, Billy has consistently written in a inconsistent style, musically, and the only thing that has drastically changed is the lyrical expression.

Why do you think that is? Hmmm... I guess it could be do to the fact that he is no longer a 20-30 something manic-depressive person, whom worked thru his personal issues, grew-up, and actually moved on with his life. I don't see where it is anybodies business to criticize him for writing how now, for it reflects his current state as a person, and I feel like that in itself deserves a certain level of respect even if you can't appreciate it yourself, due to a lack of empathy....

Billy was told the same thing by a fan in Australia. Here's how that story ended:

And this was right after he screamed his lungs out during X.Y.U. Also, Zeitgeist? Say what you will about the quality of the music, but that album definitely had some "teeth". And the upcoming album has been described as "cruel" by BC. So it's not like everything they do now sounds the same. And you'd have a hard time convincing me that their newer stuff doesn't blow a so-so album like Gish out of the water.

Thank you, so much!

I'd love to see a vid of a fan walking up to Billy saying "Oceania has no teeth." and I also love it if he'd knock their fucking teeth out. That would be entertaining.

It was a just recommendation, like a "take 2 aspirin and call me in the morning" kinda thing.... and I like My Chemical Romance quite some myself, I just suggested them b/c they do a good job of emulating that Pumpkins "teeth" thing and having their own sound as well: unlike another band I could mention but I'll leave unnamed, lol.
I also try not to administer advice I wouldn't practice myself, just so y'all know http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Smoking/peace-and-love-033.gif

Thorazine, or Chlorpromazine...

Why is this medication prescribed?

Chlorpromazine is used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia (a mental illness that causes disturbed or unusual thinking, loss of interest in life, and strong or inappropriate emotions) and other psychotic disorders (conditions that cause difficulty telling the difference between things or ideas that are real and things or ideas that are not real) and to treat the symptoms of mania (frenzied, abnormally excited mood) in people who have bipolar disorder (manic depressive disorder; a condition that causes episodes of mania, episodes of depression, and other abnormal moods). Chlorpromazine is also used to treat severe behavior problems such as explosive, aggressive behavior and hyperactivity in children 1-12 years of age. Chlorpromazine is also used to control nausea and vomiting, to relieve hiccups that have lasted one month or longer, and to relieve restlessness and nervousness that may occur just before surgery. Chlorpromazine is also used to treat acute intermittent porphyria (condition in which certain natural substances build up in the body and cause stomach pain, changes in thinking and behavior, and other symptoms). Chlorpromazine is also used along with other medications to treat tetanus (a serious infection that may cause tightening of the muscles, especially the jaw muscle). Chlorpromazine is in a class of medications called conventional antipsychotics. It works by changing the activity of certain natural substances in the brain and other parts of the body.

Also about his mother and her death/related medical conditions from what I have been told...

FYI on Pale Horse

When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, "Come and see!" I looked and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine, and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.

I wonder... if when we find something very painful in this world that we hope for its death...

I really liked all of your posts in this thread. I think the song does have different layers. Passively thinking about it reminds me of the lyrics, "Bring back the Armageddon so all the kids can go to heaven." Death is a great equalizer, and I think that we can't truly live without being aware of it. In that way fearing the end of the world gave people a different outlook. Now that the end seems to be very apparent, and caused by wars that no one wants, our own greed, or ignorance, it gives people a completely different feeling. Things seem to be grossly out of our own control, and yet our own fault. So perhaps we live on Thorazine. "There'll be no others. There'll be no long lost friends. Empty on the inside, empty of a last pretense. To stand by on feeling of the end."

I think there is some struggle to find something new in Billy's lyrics.
"If I were to listen I'd turn back. Give up on my reasons, and forgive up the past."
Here I think he is talking about his old self, and how he wants to move forward. The plea for the pale horse to come back could be perceived as Billy addressing fans desires for him to be his old self. "So many lives. A runaway life."

From some of his political statements I think he wants to overcome something I can't put my finger on anymore. To just shoot past the current conflicts, and perhaps say that to live period is better than fixating on the end. "When they locked you up they shut me out. Gave me the key [music or artistic ability]so I could show you round. Yet we were not allowed. Omens of the daydream, but caught as you're bound."

I think that going with the Tarot, Billy addresses death as final, meaning there will be no rallies, or long lost friends. He was caught in the spotlight, and running out of present tense. Fixed on a feeling of the end. The end of the old pumpkins perhaps. And, maybe asking the pale horse to come back is not mocking anyone's desires for the old band to reform, but to be renewed and balanced again.

I think that Billy's recent lyrics have been difficult, conflicted, and yet somewhat lacking their usual expansive imagery. I think the song is also about his mother, and everything that is taken away when there is an end. How do you go on?

gish is so-so now but was landmark in 1991...and it's still a whole lot better than oceania, which is the best thing the smashing pumpkins have done in ages.

The relationship with a parent is a founding principle of our personality. Losing it, whether by death, by neglect, by the absence or deviation from what is expected will undoubtedly have a significant impact on a person's life. By the recurrent reference to his mother, he underlines this fact. The child in us lack the beloved relative. Mary Star of the Sea was a reference too, as a transfer to receive the unconditional love hoped. Regardless of whether, over time, we streamline the story, even if we understand the reasons and there are no hard feelings, a sense of loss remains.

We forge in our minds an ideal of love and that is what guides us throughout our lives. In the best case, when we have loving parents, although they are not perfect, like our ideal, they come close enough for the ideal to be forgotten, aided by the affection demonstrated daily.

But those who have not, set their sights on the ideal and intersect themselves in life putting themselves in situation to fail, coming to prefer the ideal than any other lukewarm kind of love.

How to go on?

Being aware of the situation and its impact on our lives.

But on the other hand, considering "the ideal" about our life appears for me very positive. By separating what is the child's viewpoint in us and what is the adult's one, we give ourselves the opportunity to recognize more clearly what is really important to us. A look at the ideal (ours) allows us to clarify the path we must take.

And we can say the same about Mother Earth...
