Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan will use next week’s South By Southwest as a springboard to announce the band’s latest album, Oceania, which promises to be a “full online experience.”

“Our aim is to turn the ‘social’ into a new way to experience an album,” Corgan told Mashable. “By taking the medium one step further we will create an experience with Oceania online and off-line that transcends the single and the single mentality in all ways.”

Corgan plans to outline his vision of the album (plus the release date) during a session moderated by Altimeter Group Principal Brian Solis.

Corgan says that the Pumpkins plan to “[bring] back the album experience through fan engagement in a whole new way with Oceania.” He added that the band is, ‘Working closely with Superfans as gatekeepers to help interaction on a fan-to fan level by promoting their Smashing Pumpkins related blogs and enlisting their help in maintaining a few official Smashing Pumpkins social media sites.”

Corgan declined to be more specific and his publicist was vague about how, exactly, Oceania will be distributed.

“The concept that we’re not releasing this record like normal at all,” she said. “The key is that when we release the record, we’re not going to release single a viral video. You’re going to take the record a have a full online experience with it.”

When asked if that meant Oceania‘s tracks would not be sold separately on iTunes, Corgan’s rep declined comment.

This isn’t the first time that Corgan has experimented with new formats for his music. In 2009, he announced Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, a 44-track opus that he planned to make available for free on the Internet. According to reports, Oceania is an “album within an album” on Teagarden.

Hoping for the best. Better not be "the album will be split up into 5000 parts".

i am definitely intrigued. I just hope the 'release' date isn't 5 months from now. I'm also curious as to whether the "maintaining a few official Smashing Pumpkins social media sites" comment extends beyond this board.

This sounds really cool. I'm extremely intrigued. Billy has said the album is like a dream sequence... I wonder if this will be utilized?

...Am I the only one a bit worried about all this? Don't get the wrong idea, I'm always glad that the Pumpkins are pursuing new an interesting methods of distribution, I enjoyed the Teargarden release model, but when the manager says "The concept['s] that we’re not releasing this record like normal at all", I start to shake a little. I was sort of pumped for a new SP disc on the shelves.

At first it sucked, but as more songs got released I liked it. It was cool to see the change in directions, as Billy and the band wanted to start trying new things. I think all of the songs are really developed and as a whole album they would sound really good (if the trend of improvment continued)

"...Am I the only one a bit worried about all this?"

No squirrel I am also in the same boat as you....although I am intrigued to know what this idea is and how the album will be released...I have to admit it makes me scratch my head a little. Teargarden concept one song (supposedly) to be release every month or so, was a great idea...even if there was a fee involved to obtain said song it would have been an interesting idea... fell apart (release wise) so to speak. Makes me wonder if whatever the new idea is falls short of the expectations if it too could be "scrapped"

As negative as the above sounds I am eager to find out when I might be able to get this new album, how I might get it etc...the songs I have heard so far have been very good if not great in some cases...I can wait for them, but like many others I am getting a little impatient doing so. Hears hoping for the album to be released fairly soon an in a manner which allows all of the songs to be gotten at once if not fairly quickly

Not sure if you're able to give any details, but are you involved in the project Monte?

:thumbsup:/> because this is how I think of Oceania given what we've heard so far.

And "off line" means physical release right? You know how much I love records ... :coy:/>

just added an update to the article on Crestfallen.com, that might make you smile brightly!

UPDATE: For any fans worried about this being a pure digital release, Crestfallen.com has learned it will have a traditional physically released and that the marketing side will be different than normal.

How mysterious. I am unsure of what to make of his comments.

Why SWSX? Is he going to be performing?

I don't think he will.. its going be an hour long interview. he is going be part of "SXSW interactive" not part of "SXSW music" as i currently understand.

but I would not be surprise if he hung around for SWSX music

I did not realize that they were two separate things. So he is not going to be physically at SWSX but on a radio program from the event? I guess that rules out the possibility of a surprise performance.

If we know the release date on March 12, what can we infer about what the release date is likely to be? Two months later? Three?

BC announced Oceania on April 26 last year, so it'd be cool if we got it on that anniversary, but i guess that's unlikely. Also, albums still get released on tuesdays, yea?

This announcement doesn't fill me with confidence. This time was really hoping for just a regular release ie. single, video, album in record stores. Let the quality of the music sell the album without all the hocus pocus!! With the supposed backing of a major label I reckoned it would be a more traditional release so this has me worried again! I hope I'm pleasantly surprised by what Billy has in mind.

That is my concern as well, that his comments about it sound too gimmicky. I just wanted an album that would speak for itself. The "superfan" part is a turnoff. It has already been built up with great potential for disaster. I hope it works out for him. However, I am going to wait and see what he says first before questioning his thought process too deeply on this one.

SWSX runs more than just music... the interactive side has been there at least since last year if not longer...

this is how SWSX runs day by day..
Interactive: March 9–13
Film: March 9–17
Music: March 13–18

Billy will be at Austin Convention Center, Ballroom D, Monday, March 12, 3:30-4:30 (source)

Whatever. The album will be good.

Since we got that Rock In Rio Lisboa thing on May 26th, I reckon that's around the time the album'll be out. That's a couple months after release date announcement and the band's been insisting it'll be out before June.

Oh God. LOL.

I have a feeling this is going to scare off casual fans. What the hell could they have planned? Pop Oceania into your CD Drive and gain access to a live chat of other people listening to Oceania. Videos (Sean Lennon had a music video produced for every song on his album, which played like a film). Oceania Facebook/G+. Behind the scenes, making of. Oh man... I'm so hoping this isn't the disaster it could potentially (probably) be. Ability to remix tracks, stems provided/manipulation of the record.

Gimmicks. Oh lawd. Gimmicks.

I'm sorry for all of this negativity towards and between Kerry and the Pumpkins and the Pumpkins community. I know it's motsly passed, but I was fortunate enough to meet him and he was a phenominally nice person. He did a lot to help Billy over these past few years...I wish we would just let water go under the bridge on this one.

When I first read this I kind of went "Uh oh". I couldn't care less about social networking and fan interaction but I'll try to reserve judgement for now.

The announcement reminded me of this (which was kind of cool):
