I just realized: I like this song a lot.
I thought it was just ok at first. But, as has happened over and over again in the past with SP songs, my first impression was not right. Wildflower is a great song!

musically and lyrically I think it's pretty wonderful. Billy's voice really grates on me on the "wasted along the way" line he repeats over and over. Softer production on the voice would have been much better.

Yeah I agree, I tend to turn my speakers down a touch for this song. Still a nice song to finish off the album.

I actually like the "grating" quality; to me it's just emphatic, and powerfully powerless.
I feel that Wildflower continues the tradition of having a pretty, soft song to finish things up. Pomp and Circumstance, Blank Page (or 17), Farewell and Goodnight, Luna, Daydream, etc.

Wildflower is my favorite on the record, and it started out as my least favorite. It is the first SP song in years that when I listen to it I FEEL it completely. Everything from the pretty synth ambiances to the lyrics (Comfort me, what will leave will leave, etc) to that classic, wailing guitar solo... every time the solo comes in it just sounds like this whole storm of memories/emotions pour out. It's like he's just letting a whole lifetime of pain out in the open (especially because the last line before hand is "I'm wasted - along the way to reach you, along the way to reach you...). That's the best way I can describe it.
I agree the vocals could have been softer on the repetitive lines, but they sit well with me now too.
