It's my third favorite. Hell of a tune. :thumbsup:/>

Quasar is great, I'm just not into the "ride on" part. Sounds bizarre.

Quasar is definitely more exciting instrumentally, but this is still a better song, I think. Catchy little thing. If given the proper production, I could see it being the rocker of the singles if they even consider them.

Yeah, Quasar has some bad ass parts in it. The only problems I have with it are that it seems to drag near the end, it's not very cohesive (at least from the live footage I've seen), and the aforementioned "ride on" part (which could either be a lot better in the studio version, or a lot worse).

Love that riff, though. And Mike's drumming is great.

Shit, I just read the tracklist, and Quasar goes directly into Panopticon? That's going to work extremely well.

Panopticon was my least favorite of the 6 songs played live (I still loved it though) but I agree with you, the album cut of Panopticon is perfection. I was shocked at how much I absolutely loved that song after listening to the album stream.

same, panopticon i thought was gonna be really lame from the live tracks, now i adore it. Not im probably going to be in a deep minority saying this but i think it may be going into my top 10 or at least top 15

At first I was more interested in the other non-live-played Oceania songs, but Panopticon has definitely become a standout for me. While I would never suggest it as a single, it's definitely one of those songs that compliments, encapsulates and strengthens the album as a whole. Sort of like I of the Mourning from Machina, you hear that song and it's got the overall feel of the album.

Panopticon is my least favorite song from the new album. .or tied with the celestials as least favorite. To me it sounds awkward and reminds me of zeitgeist a lot.

I agree. I think the opening riff is very boring, reminds me of doomsday clock. the rest of the song is good but not great. really don't get what people see in this song, just my opinion

One of the more weaker songs on the album. The guitars are kinda all over the place. It's still considered a good song though.

Ok, so everyone knows that Oceania was released yesterday, and am I the only one that is getting a little upset at the lack of attention to Billy's lyrics??? It took me literally one listen to the song to get the lyrics. So for all of you who are driving yourself crazy trying to figure out Panopticon here it is......I used to be in the Smashing Pumpkins Collection during their Adore album and my name was Porcelina80. I am a long time Smashing Pumpkins fan and I just simply sharing my love for Billy's music. Here are the lyrics for you all :)/> * PEACE LOVE AND PUMPKINS*

Rise!
Love is here!
Oh, don't make me wonder,
Life's never clear,
What choice does it give-
to use and abuse,
to build on proof,
Oh, don't make me suffer,
Birds find the winds and way,

Rest in the shells I've designed,
Run through the fields I deny,
And stroll upon the years I'm alive,

There's a sun that shines in,
There's a world that stares out at me,
And all I refuse to please,

Breathe-
Love is air,
Oh, don't make me suffer,
To dash debonair,
What chased is the wish,
Embossed with pain,
A heart goes blank,
Oh, don't make me wonder,
To ask on behalf for you , you
Of you, where are you?
Where are you??

There's a sun that shines in,
There's a world that stares out at me,
And all I refuse to please,

There's a sun that shines in,
There's a world that stares out at me,
And all I refuse,
And all I ever use...... in me!

There's a sun that shines in me,
There's a sun that shines,
There's a sun that shines in me!!!!

- Lyrics by Billy Corgan ( typed and shared by Porcelina 80)

Great verses, chorus, lyrics, production, great song. I especially love the way the guitars soar on the chorus. Some of my favorite lyrics on the album are in this song.

Panopticon has great lyrics

I wanna be
Oh so clear...

oops that's frail and bedazzled.. jk

I like this song a lot.

favorite track on album..one of the favorite of all Pumpkins songs. It's superbad...and that's hip slang for really good. It's greasy wobbles...filthy dub beats...

there is, like, no similarity between panopticon and doomsday clock. panopticon is clearly in the zwan/(good)tbk vein, bright and poppy and driving.

says me, anyway.

This song borders on perfection to me, like i thought it was wow worthy the first time but only 9/10 levels, now its grown on me so much its getting to 10/10 levels. especially that finale, my god that last 60 seconds is perfect, like it really could not of been done any better. Thoguh i have a strange feeling like a here is no why guitar solo would of fit in this song

I was comparing the two for boring opening riffs. But I love the song now anyway :)/>

How can ppl compare old SP songs with newSP songs? That's like comparing Hard Days Night Beatles to the White Album Beatles.

I didn't like it until I heard the final straight "there's a sun that shines in me!", then I realised the true magnificence of the song.

^^ I meant it metaphorically. "There is a sun that shines in me" What a great line. Billy took my advice on writing a song from a poets perspective. Billys songwriting in this album is very different than previous releases. I had no idea he is a big of fan as my style of writing as I am of his. What works great in this album despite all the clever words and the twisting and turning accompanying it is the SPiritual aSPect of it which is something we can all relate to.

I love how it seems to be about the world outside looking in at Billy, and his imminent response. Lots of lyrics about his direction in life, his looking back on the past and towards the future. The musical world is full of fans and critics. Those same people, some of them scold Billy for his career moves, his blueprints for his music. His life, essentially. Of course, his music has arguably sucked eggs for a good chunk of the last 5 years (7-14 years depending on who you ask. Some even would say 17 years). Still, his legacy in relation to fans and critics' expectations put such an enormous amount of pressure on him. He lost sight of himself as an artist, while still claiming to be one. No longer did he know which direction to commit to, because he had this misconception that he had to please these people. In order to validate himself as an artist. He tried being happier with Zwan, and failed. He tried the artsy approach once more with TheFutureEmbrace, and nobody cared. Reforms the Pumpkins, expects everything to be fine, and it really isn't. He now has the legacy-based expectations dripping on his head, more so than ever. Everything he does is an attempt to grab attention. Commercially friendly, all out metal aggression in the form of Zeitgeist. Fans want rock, right? Wrong. So he tries singles. Through G.L.O.W., FOL, and the Teargarden songs, he constantly tries to ride the wave of an anthemic rocker. Little did he know that he couldn't just FORCE another Bullet With Butterfly Wings or Cherub Rock. Why do The Celestials and Panopticon have so many fans? Why are The Celestials and One Diamond getting radio airplay? Because they came out naturally. They don't sound forced.

Oceania is Billy finally throwing caution to the wind once again, finding himself and renewing his visions as an artist. And Panopticon is his assessment of those boundaries that held him dormant for so long. Not to mention, the acknowledgement of the fact that he still has something to say. He's not finished yet.

"And I refuse, to please."

First off let me say that this is the first song I've ever figured out by ear; I played along many times and it sounds right. I was never able to figure anything out by ear but I was on this sight and some members were arguing about tabs, that you should try to figure it out yourself because it pays off in the end and they were right. Thank you whoever it was I don't remember which thread it was :D/>
Anyway it took me a long time and I tried really hard so hope that this is useful for someone.
If anyone wants the tab I figured most of it out. Its pretty easy most of it is just playing Bm Pentatonic.
So I believe this song is in dropped D
The intro is basically these chords with hitting open D in between

---------------------------------
---------------------------------
-11-----5-----12-------14--18-----
-x------x------x-------x---x------
-9------7-----10-------12--16-----
---------------------------------

then after that play this slow part twice

---------------------------------
---------------------------------
-14----11----16----9-------------
-x-----x-----x-----x----12---11--
-12----9-----14----7-------------
---------------------------------

Then this (The 10 bend on the G means bend it a full step)

------------------------------------=-----------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------9---10---10^(12)---9----------12----------11----------9-------
--9---------------------------------------------------------------------
------7-----------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Chorus is D A C G
I'm unsure exactly what kinds of chord shapes he is using. I tried looking in the video and it seams he's using an B octive on on the G string then his second finger is hitting some other not. And the C he uses what looks like an F shape on the 10th fret of the A string.

After the chorus theres this mini solo (> means slide)

------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------10---7--7>8--------------------------------------10--7-------
--------7---------------7--9--7--6--7--6-----------------7--------------
--7>9-------------------------------------7---------7>9-----------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------

And that's all I know. I'm pretty sure its 100% accurate besides this last part that I seperated. I got stuck :rant:/> if anyone wants to help me out.

Can anyone remember the panopticon website from the Machina era? Or is this a figment of my imagination?

Or was Panopticon the corporation from the aborted GATMOG series?
