Siamese Dream DVD - Metro 1993 Kicking ass

new to the forum. i finally received my copies of the remastered albums after the Topspin delay - glad to have 'em.
Let me say, the quality of these reissues is fantastic. The packaging is first rate, the printing is flawless, the bonuses are fantastic. I've gotten a few re-releases from other bands from the same era, and the quality of those (thinking about Suede) is flimsy when compared to these. great job by everyone involved.
spent last night watching the SD DVD from the Metro, 1993. all i can say is WOW. what a gem, and a treat to watch. I'm glad they included an essentially unedited version of the concert, with all the uncomfortable banter, etc...
the performance is amazing. i can't get over how young Billy looks, and i couldn't stop thinking that he was a WAY better guitar player, even back then, than i can really fathom - and really better than just about everybody else from the "Alternative" era of the '90's (barring Jerry Cantrell and... well that's about it, really). watching him play - he's just having a blast attacking the fretboard. relentlessly creative, he can tell a story with a vital melody, then shift gears into some ridiculous shredding territory.
James, when he had his parts, holds his own too. the whole band was really a force. too bad they didn't have a Jimmy cam up on stage, but i can sorta understand it. was just at the Metro the other night, and that place is really pretty small.
anyway, this DVD in particular, is probably the best bonus i've received in any reissue set by any band i've purchased. It's a great snapshot, perfect setlist, great production. Looking forward to more new music from the pumpkins, equally looking forward to new reissues as the months tick by.
anyway, just my 2cents.

Audio mix is professional (and killer, although a bit vocal heavy at times, but that's just the live sound for you). video is surprisingly clear for an almost 20 year old video transfer. it's a great find, well worth the price of admission.
Like Killer in me said - its one of the best DVDs i own. the DVD absolutely destroys the bonus stuff from the viewphoria DVD, and rivals the best stuff from Viewphoria in terms of quality, watchability, and performance.
actually, i think it destroys viewphoria. it really is the ultimate Siamese Dream concert.
comparing these reissues to others, in terms of quality and features, i'd have to say they rival the U2 reissues of Unforgettable Fire and the Joshua Tree.
while these don't have a hard bound book like the super versions of those U2 reissues, they're also 20 or 30 bucks less than the U2 products, and i'll definitely watch this DVD again and again.
Legacy edition of the Stone Roses is another good one, but the DVD is tough to watch - and the demos are tough to digest when compared to the final album.
the Suede reissues are nice enough - the music is fantastic, and there's some great hidden gems that they dug up. but the DVDs are really a mixed bag, lots of handheld footage of shows (not all that watchable).
and the overall production is sorta ricketty. low quality cardboard/assembly, etc. its funny how this stuff matters, but it does.

the way they have fun with this song like singing along to the first solo in siva was so cool. They really did play for the fun of it and if their lives depended on it.

yeah, McCready crossed my mind. he's a fantastic guitar player.
Nothing against Mike McCready, its just that, for me, Corgan and Cantrell have way more memorable guitar parts and solos.
i know there's millions of Pearl Jam fans who would disagree. chalk it up to personal taste.

Actually, the 8/14/93 Metro show featured on the DVD wasn't the SD release party. The release party was the acoustic performance at Tower Records on July 26, 1993. They then followed it up with a proper "secret" show playing as The Turnips at Metro on July 28, 1993. The three Metro shows in August were still a big occasion, just not technically the release party for the album.

Unfortunately, the audio mix is somewhat botched, imo. The mix of the instruments is way off. My guess is that this is likely due to the way in which it was originally recorded. The engineer put James' guitar in the left channel, and put Billy's guitar buried in the right channel. The problem is that James is noticeably louder throughout the whole show, while all of Billy's parts are too quiet, including his solos. If this was the way it was originally recorded, I think the engineer must have thought that since Billy was the one singing lead vocals that he wasn't also the lead guitarist, and so kept his guitar quieter in the mix. Otherwise, if this was something they were able to fix before they released it, why they mixed the audio like that for the DVD I have no idea. A shame. It still sounds nice, as a professional recording should, but the mix should've been corrected.

That's what really bugged me when I watched this. You can hear James I think in Cherub Rock, but D'arcys vocals are completely muted ._.

I've noticed that bootleg recordings you can usually hear her, but pro shot stuff like TV performances she's usually muted or turned down so low >.>

That was funny, guess he was all in the moment in shit, lol
Did anyone notice how the audio goes funny during part of Window Paine and then the video cuts foward a little bit at one point, like the tape deteriorated slightly?

Favorites: 1) The guy yelling "IRONY!" when Billy is talking about how if there were no assholes there wouldn't be anything to complain about. 2) When Billy yells at the guy(s) messing with a girl in the audience during Siva. 3) Everything James says.

I believe the girl he was messing with was D'arcy because Billy tells the guy to let her play.
I like the part during Starla when some guy jumps up to crowd surf and waves both of his hands at Billy and it makes Billy laugh, I guess because it was so random. :sp:/>

This is by far my favorite version of Starla. God damn the cello adds so much to the song it's fantastic. My new favorite rendition of my all time favorite song.

Great set, really energetic and good crowd etc. Only time I've heard a live Spaceboy too. Great show to include with the album.
