You're correct about Zeitgeist pissing people off (so maybe it'll only sell in the 200k-300k range) but I'm sure MORE people will listen to Oceania and like it (via torrenting) compared to Zeitgeist because Oceania will be good. That's going to sell itself. The fact that Zeitgeist was mediocre will only make the quality of Oceania stand out more, thereby making the (online small time) media promote it more (holy crap! it's actually good! no really! trust us! listen now!). This is basically what happened with Eminem's last album. If Relapse had been good, it would've made Recovery not seem like as big of a deal. We can't have the counter-factual, but I wouldn't be surprised if Oceania sells just as well/is listened to by just as many people in the Zeitgeist-was-good-parallel-universe compared to our own.

Why so assured that Oceania will be good? Who the fuck knows? Your good could be someone else's trash and vice versa. I haven't heard anything from Oceania that blows the best of Zeitgeist away.

heres the thing, Eminem is not only a rap artist while rap is at its highest demand, but he also did not have a 6 years hiatus

SP is not only a rock band in a era where rock is bordering on dead but they fell so off the radar to even their fans that some people forget they even exist anymore, many people will also never accept the fact that billy is the only member

as sad as it sounds, Oceania is doomed financially, and the music critics are going to eat this album up, i can already see rolling stone's 2/5 review for it coming

even if this album was so good it topped siamese dream it would still fail financially, plain and simple this album is fucked

Indeed. I like what I've heard so far in the live performances, but that doesn't mean shit as to whether I'll like the recorded versions. It's important for everyone to remember how (especially in the last couple years) live has differed significantly from studio recording. There's absolutely no way to tell until we actually hear it.

Indeed. I learned my lesson from the Machina days. A number of those songs sounded very different from the album. To some extent the same happened with Zeitgeist as well. There could be little aspects of the live songs that people love that is not on the recorded versions. The record execs who have heard Oceania keep describing it as "ambitious," which in industry terms usually means it is going to be a hard sell and uncertainty on the reaction it will receive. It might end up being a fan favorite yet not a mainstream or critical success.

The album is not released yet, we don't know what it sounds like. And in my opinion Billy hasn't released anything near being nominated for a grammy since Zwan. Making a decent album isn't enough. He has to make something great. and what are the odds for that? And then talking about a possible grammy is just stupid.

Imagine the megaton if Billy succeeds by himself what he couldn't do with Jimmy on board? I really hope Billy lets Nicole sing on the album, I really like her and I think she's a good fit for the band.

I really hope this album does well critically. I've been really impressed by the latest songs I've heard, Pinwheels are Oceania are my personal favourites. I'll feel bad for Billy if the album is slated by critics, it's obvious he is putting a lot into it.

its so gonna get panned hard by critics. especially rolling stone. I'm gonna predict a metacritic score somewhere in the 40's and 50's. its a shame and it will probably break billy's heart. It will probably make the next release be awful too cause hes gonna think oceania was the wrong sound to go for and that no body wants that type of music so he will try something different that is truly abyssal

so yah dont get your hopes up on oceania getting any critical approval, and the CD is going to tank in sales most likely as well. i hope it does well but im not going to put my faith in something that has no chance. I'm worried about how billy will take the backlash cause he legitimately thinks hes doing the right thing for the band

Why do all assume it's gonna get panned by critics? We already know it's gonna be way better than Zeitgeist, and Rolling Stone gave Zeitgeist 4/5.

What are you basing this on? And why 'especially Rolling Stone'? :scatch:/>

"A great return to form for the once mighty SP. Unfortunately, for them, there are not standout singles to lure the casual fan."

Just you wait and see.

I don't get the hype. The song's alright, but it's nothing I'd be posting on Facebook about.

Yeah, but "radio song" doesn't mean "good". It basically just means the type of song where few people will dislike it, no matter how many people really like it.

Since everybody is predicting, here's my idea of what will happen. Contrary to recent posts, I think Oceania will be fairly well received by critics. But I think sales will be low compared to a warm critical reception. I don't think this would be a terrible thing to happen. It would be a good step forward to have better sales the next time. I just think that the hate from the critics to towards SP has faded away. I think Teargarden and the last tours have done some good in that sense.

the quality of the album doesnt matter, people are going to hate the album based off bias not the actual quality, and the reviewers for some reason love to rag on this band, ecpecially rolling stone who has given adore a 2/5 and machina a 1/5.

no it's because they perceived that the album was anti-global warming. If you spout leftist views then you automatically get 3 stars or more. RollingStone is fucking awful. It's so mindlessly politically driven and boomer oriented it makes me gag.

and I'm a pretty progressive person but it's not hard to call bullshit when any artist with a visible liberal bone in their body gets favored treatment over non-political artists. I'm sure they were dismayed when Billy starting denouncing global warming as a scam and went all tea party on everyone.

It seems that the ranking of 'Zeitgeist' on rollingstone.com is now two stars, not four.

They always do that crap. They gave SD 3/5 and MCIS 2.5, but then upgraded em later. They gave Postal Service's "Give Up" 3/5, and then put it on top 10 albums of the year. Part of the perils of having one person do the review I guess, but they basically have a review when an album comes out, and then change the rating depending on how the general public responds. They do this all the time. So silly.
