Yeah but I think he really has to emphasize the online and the offline part at the talk on Monday. Most of the complaining seems to be coming from people who think it will be a singularly online experience and I think it would be wise of Billy to focus on and emphasize the traditional alternative available.

I'm down for new innovative things as long as we still get a physical release. It's like icing on top for me. :happy:/>

I doubt that there's anything to be worried about. Corgan released a physical copy of the first Teargarden EP so I don't see why he'd neglect doing the same for Oceania.

I'm sure it'll be interesting and one thing we all know is that Billy will put 110% behind this project, it's about time that we got some official information on it. A bit annoying that we got an announcement yesterday that an announcement was coming today. Hopefully he'll use SXSW to actually announce something other than an announcement. :rolleyes:/>

Then just buy the physical release that's coming out and ignore everything else. Not something to really worry about.

Anyone else find it interesting that the project that started with the philosophy that the album is dead, and to have each song standalone ala a bunch of singles.... has now pulled a 180 and is embracing the album format, even so much so that it will be a new "album experience".

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, or even unnatural...

Who's to say it will have any effect on the speed at which you'll be able to listen to the album in a traditional format?

because old people do that sometimes.

and I dont think it will be like the reissues. it seems like there will be much more to it than just a physical album and/or album download. I just hope I dont have to add super exclusive download to access whatever is going on

No way - it's a state of mind.

Yes perhaps the content will be mostly online and visual - but I would never put an idea down before I even know what it is - wtf?

I think the SP webisodes are good examples of an online experience related to the music.

well, we'll see how this goes, but...i get the feeling like every time the band tries to be "visionary" with their release methods, it falls flat. Key examples are Zeitgeist and TBK so far. I think everyone was hoping for a focus on the traditional release method and traditional marketing. I feel like the band lost faith in those methods for the wrong reasons. I feel like they said "oh, those methods don't work, it's the method's fault", when really, SP just isn't a popular band anymore (and really hasn't been since Adore technically flopped) and if SP wants to get big again in any sort of way, the internet isn't going to be their salvation. It will be through traditional methods. TBK was all internet and nobody cared except the fans. Internet is a nice medium, but it seems like all the popular bands are ones that actually have their names in good stock on the shelves at Target and Wal-Mart. And besides, popularity isn't about fans having great taste, it's about having a few hit songs that a lot of people like enough to go buy your album, and having the visibility for enough people to buy your album in the first place. So the band really needs to focus on who exactly their market is....the discerning music lovers online who are aware of what's going on, or the masses who will make them big if they take a liking to them? Certainly both can be targeted, and that would be best - but I think a real push needs to be made on the traditional level. I want to see an SP banner in the music section at Target announcing the album.

both internet and stores need to be utilized-we all know that.

I'm still hoping for the best, who knows maybe it will make us scratch our heads in a wtf mode but yet its totally awesome because none of us knew what was really going on.

yeah, maybe it will be something totally cool.

or maybe it will be something too complex and we'll all scratch our head and go "huh?" because all we really wanted was just the music already.

time will tell.

well, with any hope, it will be something cool and fun that will re-invigorate fan interest in the project. We all are tired of waiting for the music, and while we want it NOW already, I'd say the excitement in the community has waned due to the long wait. Just a simple release after such long anticipation might be a little anti-climactic, no matter how great the rest of the music is. So maybe the new stuff will help there be new excitement and interest and fun.

But yeah - SP has been knocking the traditional release method for quite awhile now, saying that it's broken and doesn't work...and I used to think maybe they had a point, except....I realize other bands do just fine with the traditional release method and still maintain popularity. So...the problem doesn't seem to be the release method. The problem, I think, really is just that SP isn't popular anymore. Sure, it's a legendary band that everyone has heard of and still puts out great music faithfully that the masses don't appreciate - but they aren't popular, and you can't blame the release method itself alone for that. Maybe you can say that the record labels aren't promoting them enough or that it's bad choice of singles release or this that or the other....but, I dunno. I'd say that ignoring the traditional format altogether, after Zeitgeist didn't live up to expectations of certain individuals, was a mistake. There needs to be equal attention both on the internet and on the traditional format to get the kind of success they are shooting for, it would seem. Oh, and no different album colors with less songs on them.

I wonder if this "experience" release method is a new idea from Billy or if it was the original plan. And this has to be why it took so long to find a label, right? I imagine it could be potentially seen as a risky move sales-wise, whatever it is.

awww. precious little discoveries!!

i have a cousin who was in a band. he chose band over college. they had some very mild, brief success. then they called it quits.

now he has a kid and works retail and hates it. it was ballsy to go for the glory, but i pity the foolhardiness of it all.

just added an update to the article on Crestfallen.com, that might make you smile brightly! UPDATE: For any fans worried about this being a pure digital release, Crestfallen.com has learned it will have a traditional physically released and that the marketing side will be different than normal.

Brilliant ! Thanks Monte for the update.

Hazza! Okay thanks :)/> I'm sort of expecting a refined MACHINA promotional scheme. If I were to try and make a comparison

I'm hoping for something refined as well, i.e. more Machina-ish than Zeitgeit-ish. I mean something more tangible than a change in the color of the cover which seemed to be only based on commercial purposes to make a long story short.

If I had to make a list of reasons why I'd love to live in the US, SXSW would be right up there.

“By taking the medium one step further we will create an experience with Oceania online and off-line that transcends the single and the single mentality in all ways.”

Call me long in the tooth, but what we are saying is that none of the tracks stand out as a viable single.

While I'll reserve judgement on this direction, I will just say that there are loads of bands that only release LP's nowadays. I can quite happily live without any more physical single releases. Have you seen the state of the singles charts since, well, like forever?

Please, just put the song teasers online, then make it available as a digital and physical LP.

I have a horrible feeling the first listens will be by email invite and we'll have to sit in a virtual chat room with idiots talking over the music. 'everyone mute your mic or die!!!'

Plenty of people have stated here that they didn't care about Oceania anymore, and that all the excitement had gone, but a single article online about a future anouncement generated a hundred of posts in row in this very thread within a few hours (and one should take into account time difference!).

Isn't it ironic...don't you think? :p/>
