First release: Siamese Dream Live. Billy hand selects his favorite live version of all thirteen tracks from any era. Simple, short, easy, guaranteed to please. Fuck yeah.

I know Billy said 'only studio' for first stuff. But just for a minute, just for a second, dare to imagine that for each year... there are no more blanks... and where possible, we get soundboards. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Yes. If you'll notice, before the interview no one was clamoring for the release of the Rubano tapes. But once we were told they could be released, people have Rubano Fever. Why? BECAUSE IT'S THE ONLY FUCKING THING WE KNOW EXISTS. Give us a damn list. Not even of everything. Lucky 13, make a list of three releases as candidates and let us vote.

I've long thought this as well, but In the Arms of Sheep has a snippet of lyrics in the PM clip, and Speed was performed twice as a fully-formed song at the Double Door so presumably was rehearsed as such. I think it's a safe guess that most of the PM "songs" are just jammed riffs, but were enough of them worked into songs to make up an interesting release? Possibly, once someone takes the time to go through everything.

I'll take 70 odd jams.

In the 3 - give us an option for; different candidates - though please. They might all be crappy. :p/>

I *knew* I remembered seeing more early setlists somewhere in the immediate aftermath of Frank beginning his archive work. Thanks for the reminder.

It's important, yes, but of no interest to me at least. (As if you couldn't have guessed by now...)

2. PASTICHIO MEDLEY SET: My other idea for the first release is a complete CD/vinyl/digital release of ALL the Pastichio Medley songs. It could be called the Pastichio Medley set and have full versions of all the songs from the Medley. It would probably be two or three or maybe four CDs, I'm guessing? Of course, this option would potentially take a lot of work tracking down Pastichio Medley tracks (per Billy's discussion). I know this is not chronological exactly but I am assuming that the archive people have been looking at Mellon Collie/Aeroplane stuff lately to prepare for those reissues, at least. This could be priced very reasonably, possibly $75-100 (possibly less???) for the boxset (or more with cool pack-ins) and less for the digital?

This thread is kind of becoming a clusterfuck right now, but I really want to get my two cents in. This is EXACTLY the idea I had. A box set, or just some kind of physical release of all the Pistachio Medley songs is my holy grail. To whoever said it shouldn't be released because Billy remembers it as just being a lot of jamming... forget that. I think many of us DO want to hear this, and will put the money towards seeing all these songs released. Personally, I want to hear all original songs demoed/recorded in studio from the Mellon Collie era, i.e., Towers of Rabble, Speed, etc. That also of course includes the Pistachio Medley songs.

Also wouldn't mind a remastered release in higher fidelity of Quiet and Other Songs, and to dig deeper, if there is ANY other demo or recording floating around of She Says, please release it. Let me bold this for emphasis: Would love to hear any other version of She Says. I absolutely love that song... always hated the fact it wasn't officially released anywhere.

this don't agree with this exactly; but it does remind me of something ive always hoped would be an important part of the archive releases- tracking the progression of live song versions across the eras. maybe for each era there should be a release that focuses on how the band handled songs from previous eras.

Any b-sides from all the albums.
Any demos.
If this exists- the re-recorded Adore album with Jimmy on drums.

I'll take just about anything.

Sorry, just reading stuff more in detail now. Apparently the rumors of a re-recorded Adore started with a fan interview with Jimmy:

"The Jimmy recording drums on Adore Version 2 began with me interviewing Jimmy August 15th 2003 while Jimmy was doing a drum clinic in Greensboro, NC.

Jimmy stated that Pug/Behold! The Nitemare/To Sheila/ as well as a Salsa version of The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete had been re-reworked by the entire band, in between Jimmy's return and the Machina release, and they would try to re-do the entire album for a special release at some point down the road, possibly the 10 year anniversary of adore.. which would be next year. James + D'arcy had also been involved in this project. But as you can see with the Metro DVD... not all things that are finished are released in a timely manner, so we may be waiting a while on this.. If there is no hope for release maybe we can hope for a leak, because a more rocking To Sheila would be worth waiting for."

Jimmy has been known to joke around...especially with the "salsa". We could confirm with Billy, but we probably already know the answer :/

I was at that drum clinic. adore version 2 is real- atleast as a partial thing. I heard corgan talk about it recently; somewhere in the past 2 yrs. I cant remember if it was an interview or what. I know the last time they came to Charlotte nc, they were doing Ltd soindcheck shows. well, for mine they had tech problems that led to them being able to play only like 3 songs. but at first they thought they may not get a chance to play at all before having to prep for the actual show. so Billy gave us (I think it was only first 20 in line) a very good q and a. it was like 20mins long. it was Billy and Jeff, but only really Billy talked. he mentioned the re-done adore. to my memory it was implied the whole thing hadn't been redone. I do seem to remember him referencing a more barn burning straight-rock version of Ava adore that had only been possible with jimmy's drumming. I think the reason he was talking about it was talking about fans' ability to accept alt versions. he was like "if Jimmy adore comes out, then what do folks take as the definitive adore? would a reworked adore be taken as an interesting twist, or more a historical analysis thing?". that was gross paraphrasing. wish I could cite a reference.

I always thought this was a joke. However, a better way of appraching this question would be for the Lucky 13 determine; what / how much is the the archive in terms of rehearsal for Arising / Machina era; The likelihood of the band at least working on other Adore songs with JC is rather high, given live sets i would hazard. Even if they didn't record anything pro in-studio.

Regardless of Adore tracks, I think before I get more information about the archives, the Machina era is what I'm most interested in. So, the more I know about what is available from this era - the better.

Arising! version (1999/04/23)

Fuck yeah. San Diego got the shortest set of the tour, but some of the best performances. I dunno the source of the bootleg I have (it's not the one on archive.org), but someone in the crowd yells "GO JIMMY!" during his intro and it fits the mood perfectly. Exhilarating.

I meant to say something about the interview. I don't know if the adore reissue is at all lucky13 territory, but: Billy mentioned that it would come out next record store day. albums have a season to them, AMD I cant think of a worse time to put out adore. its my favorite sp record AMD i never listen to it in spring or summer. that is a winter record all the way. to me it seems better that mcis and aeroplane should come out together in the summer. that will draw a ton of fans in, and THEN do adore during the holiday season.

I also wanted to say about different versions of songs in the archives: Billy said 12 takes of silverfuck would be boring. but also we want alt versions..maybe "takes" should be stayed away from unless it shows us something about the evolution of the song, or an alternate path for the song. just a fill in solo doesn't make enough difference.

In some songs, I think it really would. I'd be massively interested to hear if, for one small example, Muzzle had a number of different versions which only had differences in 'fills', rather than the wider song structure. You only need to listen to the Arising show to know how important some of those fills are to people/the song. I want to see where those parts came from through rehearsal and different takes. If they were happened upon in the first version or so, JC's genius once again proved. His genius would be proved in a different way if we were able to reconstruct the path that took him to the final versions. This, this is but one of the potential marvels of this project. It could be so amazing...

It could be like looking through Michelangelo's sketch books...

Yeah I always figured it was a joke as well. But if there was some rehearsal tapes of Jimmy playing Adore songs and in general the rehearsals for the Arising/Machina era tours would be cool if good quality.

I had listened to it. One guy suggested Pale Scales and the Mashed Potatoes Box Set. Monte said that Pale Scales could end up on the Machina bonus CD but that's something that he could ask Billy about it. That person suggested that you could packaged Mashed Potatoes could be issued the way it was given out to friends of the band. Th guy suggested the same could be done for Machina II, where people get the package the way it was given to those who were told to release it for free. So the 12" vinyl album with the the three EPs. Monte said that Pastichio Medley songs would not likely end up on a TAFH box set since a lot of it is apparently just instrumentals (weren't some of these already on the Gravity Demos?), so it's one of the things they are look into. This same guy wanted to hear all the different Silverfuck jams from the entire MCIS tour.

One person was an archivist for the Cincinnati Reds or something, called in and suggested they could do something like showcasing the evolution of songs, from demos/live versions to studio version. Monte and the guy talked about how they might have widdle down the amount of versions, based on if Billy thought it was an unlistenable version with bullshit lyrics and stuff.

Monte suggested an interest in cleaned up versions of songs like "Methusela". Both he and the first caller suggested people look at places like SPFC to look at potential archival material to suggest. He said the Lucky 13 is in flux but they aren't currently taking any new people in. He talked about needed to figure out whether he could say to Billy that a prospective member could be trusted or that he respects them. Again, I think this suggests that there isn't strictly 13 people handpicked to be in the Lucky 13. Perhaps once the group is finalized, then they will announce who more of the people are or something.

Wait, the team behind this isn't even finalised??? My expectation level just dropped significantly; I thought they must have been working behind the scenes on this thing for some time before announcing it. This does at least explain the completely haphazard approach taken so far. I wish they'd taken the time to really think about this before announcing it :|

I'd like the actual video of this acoustic performace of Porcelina w/ John Popper on harmonica from 10/19/97:

I know Bridge School films and archives all of their benefit concerts. Not sure if they'd be cool to allow a clip to be put out though.....I know they strike any of their proshot stuff that ends up on youtube so they seem somewhat protective.

Either way that's a brilliant performance....

I went strollling thru SPFC to get adore demo info.

and now I'm curious to know if there is an acoustic version of Once in a while.

I know people have talked about the rumor of Jimmy on Adore...clarification would be nice as it could be very interesting to hear.
I am curious to know what wasn't released from the Adore era. Have we heard everything or is there more demos since it says 40 odd demos

Quote

The Pumpkins (with Matt Walker) supposedly recorded about 45 minutes worth of demos for the Batman soundtrack, so Guns of Love and Ethers Tragic are probably from that tape. Roughly 30 demos for the album Adore were also recorded at this time, so it's likely that both the Adore and Batman demos where recorded at this session; the album version of Annie-Dog was drawn from these sessions.

Quote

Although Adore was mostly recorded at Studio 2 at Sunset Sound, many tracks were pieced together from other sessions at: Battery Studios, Bugg Studios, Chicago Recording Company, Sadlands, and Village Recorder. Waiting and Saturnine were merely unfinished song fragments. There are conflicting reports to as how much material was recorded; it has been suggested that there are approximately 14 or 15 more finished songs from the Adore sessions, but Neil Perry says that 40-odd songs or song fragments were recorded.

I'm thinking there are things we have not heard.

Being a huge fan of the Infinite Sadness tour, here's a few dates I think "The Lucky 13" should check out.

  • 1996-05-02 - Named by Billy in 2000 (during an interview before the United Center show) as one of the best show the band ever performed. Pretty standard set for the European leg, but the performance is extremely good. This is in no part due to the energy given off by the crowd, as they can be heard singing the lyric to pretty much every song in the set. Kerry Brown joins the band on Drums for both 1979 and Silverfuck.
  • 1996-05-07 - The band plays in Birmingham, the birth place of Heavy Metal (home town of both Black Sabbath and Judas Priest). Various other Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Judas Priest teases played throughout show. Richard and Geno from Filter join the band during Silverfuck. Because Billy didn't want the show to end, Billy brought out various members of Filter and Jonathon for a jam session, including the only pre-hitus performance of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
  • 1996-05-15 - The final show of the European Leg and the final Acoustic/Electric format of the tour. 19 of the 28 songs from Mellon Collie are performed. Jonathon plays drums Silverfuck. Has been requested many time before in this thread. It was filmed (by MTV?).
  • 1996-12-10 - Supposedly filmed by Virgin for an projected home release (fan reviews mention banter about a "million dollar camera" filming the band). Pretty standard setlist for a late-96 show. Rare performance of The Aeroplane Flies High.

I've listened to a handful of Infinite Sadness tour boots, but kept few, as the performances often sound so true to the album (actually a significant achievement) that it hardly seems worth having both.

Yeah I will be interesting to know what they have and what they don't have. I seem to remember something about some of the early Adore demos being completely scrapped (I think that include the early 1996 adore demos that we have not heard). But it has been so long since I looked at that info. I noticed that you quoted some info about some of the final recordings being pieced together from early sessions, that I thought I remembered reading, so thanks for reproducing the info here.

That's an interesting take on things. For me, I generally associate Adore with the summer, because it was originally released on June 1 and 2 1998. I think Billy's description of it is 'arcane night music' is appropriate, as the feel is more conducive to the night, especially driving at night. But that doesn't mean I only listen to it at night. Siamese Dream is something I associated with summer too, since it has a deceptively bright sound to it and it was released originally on July 26, 1993 (if I remember correctly) but that reissue was released in November.

That's what I got as the sense of the situation. So I was a bit surprised that Monte's interview made it sound like he was still sussing people out or whatever you want to call it. Maybe he was mixing tenses or something.

Haha yep. I got the impression they started too or had assembled the team shortly before the announcement (I could be wrong) but Billy and co were eager to announce that this project was happening on Friday the 13th let people know what was going to happen.
