Yeah on the SD comments, as Billy said, there are parts of the album that recall the sound of SD -guitar in Chimera and Inkless particularly, but the album overall sounds like a cross between Machina and Zwan to me.

I feel like this is what Machina 2 could have sounded like in parts. This album is kind of what I imagine Home to sound like behind all the fuzz.

All due respect Simon, but honestly, I doubt 99% of the people who have been here more than 2 weeks would disagree with this. No, Mayfair doesn't like a lot of the new stuff, but he doesn't blindly hate it, he gives it a fair chance, and gives his honest opinion, he'll admit when he does like something, but there is just something especially appealing to him about the pre-2000 SP, and none of us have a problem with that because he is respectful of us in return, and the guy is an endless well of knowledge. Some newcomer calling one of our most respected members a "tool" hardly knowing anything about him is something I take personal offense to. Mayfair is a good guy.

Agreed 100%. I have a ton of respect for Mayfair. He is civil and conscientious towards others' opinions while critiquing post-2000 material. Would you rather he be malicious and completely out to get you? Fuck's sake...give the guy a break. He said it was "ok" and he'd given it another chance down the line. Let it be.

Really surprised at how well received this album is. Tempations...

That said...

WHERE IS SNAIL?! His opinion is what truly matters to me. :yes:/>

As much as I hate to be a hypocrite with what I said a couple pages back, I cannot resist.

CD burned. Lyrics and song explanations printed. Going to give a listen before work. I don't have a computer right now, so you'll see my opinion on it this weekend. :)/>

Happy listening, everyone.

Ive listened to this about 15 times all the way through...and I still say best album since Adore. Its probably a hair better than Gish as well, though that may be more because ive completely played Gish out at this point. As much as I love Machina 1&2, there's a soul to Oceania that those albums just don't have. It goes without saying that its better than Zeitgeist, or the earlier TBK material, though im not a hater of either.

I wonder how much input Nicole had in regard to the bass parts? Usually Billy's bass parts are functional but the bass parts in Oceania seem a bit more dynamic.

well billy may have suggested certain ideas that made it onto the album. but he most likely didn't write any complete bassline for any one song on oceania.

I'm unable to realistically put anything above the Gish-MCIS period. It will always be my favorite music of all time.

Right now I would say this album is more consistent than Adore or Machina but the highs on those albums are not duplicated on Oceania. Easily the best since Machina though.

I think this has been a trend, with the exception of "Stellar", since Machina. He's put out some good albums, but the best songs on those albums don't reach the highs of his past work. "Stellar" is the only 5/5 song he's written since "Stand Inside Your Love".

This isn't a knock- there's probably only 20 or so 5/5 songs in his whole career. Not easy to do.

Violet Rays is as good as anything on Adore or Machina (not a huge fan of Gish of Siamese Dream these days) and MSIC is the great album ever made in my eyes.

So far I like it better than the following albums : Gish, Machina 1 and 2, Zietgeist, TFE. This may change over time but that's my stance as of now

im at about the same mind set, though im a little on the fence about beating machina 1, stand inside your love, age of innocence, and try try try are whats preventing me from saying oceania, might change over time especially since it took me no joke 50 listens for me to finally like stand inside your love.

its still a close call for me

Don't be surprised MSOTS is great in my book. This one comes close to edging it out as well and may over time but I really liked that album tremendously

i don't think this will ever surpass machina II in my opinion, but it has the legs to get past machina (and obv. zeitgeist)...so i'm pretty fucking happy!

like, really fucking happy actually.

i don't know how anyone can realistically put oceania over gish or adore. i'd say it beats zeitgeist and the other tbk stuff, maybe msots too, but that's about it.

Is it just me or do the first 5-6 notes of Pale Horse sound like a super slo-mo version of OWATA's beginning? Seriously. Listen to the first couple of notes to OWATA, then Pale Horse.

I have a hard time ranking SP albums period. Aside from ranking MCIS #1 (which is the greatest album I have ever heard) I could try to rank the others and have, but everytime I listen to one of their albums I start thinking "this might actually be my next favorite", so my #2 is always changing. Aside from Zeitgeist which would be my least favorite (although I do still like it) and maybe Machina II being my 2nd least favorite (for now until a proper release, great songs, just hard to listen to because of the quality) I really can't rank the rest of the albums.

As far as it being realistic to put Oceania ahead or in my case on par with Gish or Adore, it certainly is realistic obviously. I have listened to Oceania repeatedly in last few days and think it fits in perfectly into what I consider the greatest catelog of music there is with a band that is determined to reinvent themselves with every album they release. But to each their own.

well when your like me and think gish is the weakest of all the SP albums including zeitgeist its really not that hard, adore will be impossible to beat for me cause well......look to the left

gish is a sweet album and all and a cool debut one but, it feels......like its still in the demo stage i guess. The band was only just getting to grasp their potential and it really showed in the work, the remaster did boost my opinion in it but ide say its the album i listen to the least cause frankly i never really want to. Thats why its so easy for pretty much anything he puts out to top it.

again far from bad, its quite good actually. But its still the worst to me and unless he puts out something of shitcore quality i think it will stay that way

MCIS>Machina>Adore>Oceania>Siamese Dream>Machina2>Zeitgeist>Gish

Thats just right now... I know SD so low? but I just cant listen to it much anymore... very rare these days.. I prefer mature pumpkins
If Machina 2 is fixed up then that would be ahead of it too. And I dont hate Z or Gish..

Fair enough but quite a few of the tracks could come straight from Siamese Dream, easily, so i don't understand his argument. Fair enough though, but i'm reading quite a few criticisms from fans that seem to be one-eyed about the early days when in reality this new album has the quality and craftiness of an early album, easily. If you can't hear it then you're just blocking it out automatically. which is silly.

I even read one fan somewhere else, completely dismissing Oceania and he hasn't even heard it yet. But made these pathetic reasons as to why it couldn't be anywhere near the glory days. Come on ....

I find it equally ridiculous that fans are saying this album is better than gish, siamese dream, machina, adore etc. when it's clearly not.

Obviously there's nothing clear about that. Seen as a fully thought out and well executed piece of art I think it's fair to say that in this regard "Oceania" is superior to "Gish". And I think those two records are the most logical to compare since both are the works of new bands working out who and what they are.

It's a great thing that Corgans work is so consistantly versatile that most of us can agree that the new record is damn good, but are wildly divided in terms of how to rank the albums. For me the ranking goes like this:

"Adore" > "Mary Star of the Sea" > "Mellon Collie and the infinite sadness" > "Machina" > "Oceania" > "Siamese Dream" > "Zeitgeist" > "The Future Embrace" > "Gish" > "Machina2".

The local record shop puts vinyl out early if they have it. I'll check Sunday

Liking Oceania a lot so far. Only complaints would be that some of the vocal melodies are kinda bland/generic and the instrumentation (guitars especially)sounds, um..... artificial and pasted together. They just don't sound organic to me. Maybe it will sound better on the actual release. Otherwise, it's a great set of songs.

Still think they ruined Oceania with the fade-ins and outs.

It clearly is better than Gish and most of Siamese Dream. Adore and Machina? It's up there, it really is.

A little shocked how much I liked this album.

Maybe Billy still has a few good songs left in him.

Totally agree with this quote from a review I just saw - "This isn’t Siamese Dream, Adore or Zeitgeist: this is Oceania and it’s close to genius."

A little shocked how much I liked this album.

Maybe Billy still has a few good songs left in him.

<3/>

Oh he has plenty more GREAT songs in him, don't worry about that.

Sun Times quote on Oceania - "Dedicated fans can feel vindicated. Wayward souls can return to the flock. Doubters can hush up." Perfect quote!

Don't be surprised MSOTS is great in my book. This one comes close to edging it out as well and may over time but I really liked that album tremendously

that album is a fucking religious experience to me. and i don't mean in a christian sense.

I was a bit dispondant when I heard that Oceania would be played start to finish on tour, but that was before hearing it. Now i'm delighted it will be.
