Billy talks Oceania (a bit)

awesome! free listening to the album with the man himself. hopefully his insights can help me appreciate the album a bit more. so far though, Quasar sounds kind of like SP on autopilot...it's kindof a mashup of old SP rockers. the intro is pretty cherub rock/geek usa, and the main riffs are very reminiscent of tristessa. Quasar's melody is so non-existent that i barely noticed when it changed into Panopticon. is billy only capable of writing rock riffs utilizing slidey octaves? it's starting to sound kind of one-dimensional. Oh, and if you're gonna write a song called Panopticon, which is a cool title, it shouldn't sound like this. it should be a creepy atmospheric song about big brother/the nwo and you know it. Celestials...I don't find it very memorable, doesn't grab me. Violet Rays...now this is more like it. That ascending keyboard arpeggio doesn't sound very SP to my ears, but at least this song has more atmosphere. It captures what I originally imagined Oceania would sound like- breezy, but kind of ominous.

My Love is Winter...decent melody but I couldn't hear most of the lyrics. Nice shoegazey guitars and the solo was alright. Not quite as good as Song for a Son, but still decent. I like the simple groove of One Diamond One Heart. The keyboard flavor still sounds distinctly un-SP to my ears but it works. This song is like a Zwannish equivalent to Beautiful or With Every Light, it's genuinely uplifting. Again, I can't make out the lyrics but so far I think this one has the most potential to be a single. Pinwheels...the intro is pretty but a little too long imo. That little da-da, da-da, da-da da daaa guitar lick feels weak. The song is pretty overall but it sounds like it's always on the verge of a great hook or chorus, but it never delivers.

I'll have to give this a listen when I get back from work. If it wasn't for work I would be listening to this now.
