I know that Billy has stated that Siamese Dream was heavily influenced by Boston, Queen, and Sabbath. I also think he's named Bauhaus, Cure, Joy Division as influences on Gish. Has he ever gone on record what bands/styles influenced Mellon Collie?

Mellon Collie is so stylistically over the map that it encompasses all of the Pumpkins key influences.
But Corgan did say that it was intended as Generation X answer to The Wall. Early in the recordings he mentioned Pet Sounds and The White Album as influences in terms of the album's production and musical scope as well.

I remember him making those statements in regards to the general scope of the album, not the actual musical composition. I was just curious if there was a band that he purposefully knicked the overall sound from. I think you can compare all (most) of their albums to single band or style:
Gish - psych-rock
Siamese Dream - 70's rock, Boston
MCIS - 70's (glam) rock, The Wall or Ziggy Stardust
Adore - arcane night music, I think he name checked Lou Reed at one time but that might have only been in reference to how it wasn't received well but would be understood after some time
Machina - ??? um.... Pop-Tarts??
Zeitgeist - sorta metal, he did name check Alice in Chains
Oceania - Yes

I think 70s rock in general is the only MCIS influence; I'm not sure.

Corgan once described Mellon Collie as "a psychedelic album made by a metal band from the 1920's".

Great Question.
I think survival.
(it was a make or break album)
SP is a very unique band.
They were their own inspiration.
Grunge which back in those days was only known as Alternative music,
was Heavy Metal for those that dint know how to play Heavy Metal in the first place lol
