  1. In Topic: Best ever SP song, lyric-wise?

    04 May 2013 - 01:28 PM

Disarm is def in my top three, dear christ that song is utter perfection. "Disarm you with a smile, and leave you like they left me here, to wither in denial, the bitterness of one who's left alone" that whole section still makes me tear up on the right day, after years.

I would say Once Upon a Time is up there too.. "Mother I've tried, wasted my life.. 'I haven't given up,' I lie, to make you so proud in my eyes." so many hard hitting lines in that one as well.

I do agree To Sheila is one of the most well/beautifully written ones they've done as well. Medellia is another, as well as Soot and Stars and Here Is No Why. Ugh there's so many, but I'd say the ones I've mentioned here are probably my top picks..... for now..................

I thought the end of Ruby WAS Nighttime version? I just wished it was longer than a minute.

that's what I meant lol. I was hoping so bad it'd be that version, and voila it was, which led to me being very very very happy.

yeah, i don't see the superlative songwriting in the title track to oceania...and i really cannot stand TTWMLI. it's like LMGTWTY, a song SP fans seem to love that i find SO boring and devoid of any magic. i really do love rose march, though. tears sometimes. and i like a lot of the spirits in the sky stuff, and the rite of spring from the cruise, and baby on the ukulele...so it's odd really--i have liked pretty much everything he's done post-original SP, except for most of the stuff since he REVIVED the name SP.

but because your post here was so positive and respectful and because we do agree on a lot, i will try those tracks again to see if i missed something, O and wildflower especially.

I liked Rite of Spring a lot, and some of the AG stuff was quite pretty. And yeah, do give it another chance, it might not do anything for you but coming from a similar perspective on SP music maybe it will hit a nerve at some point like it did for me. Especially Wildflower. Something about that song, the way it is constructed, the poetic lyrics, the arrangement of keyboards and tones, that screaming solo.. it's just so SP to me. It reminds me of the more emotional, nostalgic sounding bits of older SP.. Soot and Stars, Hope, etc.

The new mix of Rotten Apples is astonishing. Methusela is heart wrenching. Here Is No Why demo is fucking great. Thirty Three demo is beautiful. Love the Medellia reboot.

My top favorite is for sure Mellon Collie Nighttime version though. I was hoping so badly it'd be the version at the end of Ruby when I saw the tracklist. This version of MCIS is probably one of the most beautiful pieces of music out there.

And I almost forgot... Autumn Nocturne!!!! Hell yes.

Oceania and Wildflower are the two biggies for me, but I know how you feel. I do sometimes find myself 'trying to like' certain stuff.

I agree that the output in the prime decade was just mind blowing, and is absolutely what makes SP my favorite band. I only really liked one song on Zeitgeist (That's the Way) which is a great song, but I still feel longing for better production/mixing while listening. Oceania is a GOOD album, but like you I can't connect in the same way, it is sort of like a new branch, even for a band diverse as SP. However like I said, Oceania and Wildflower give me chills just listening to them, and it's because I hear the heart and beauty that I hear in older SP. Those songs to ME represent what Billy does best, which is merge powerful song writing, powerful vocals/lyrics with a very moving and colorful musical backdrop.

I also really like Pale Horse, Inkless, Quasar, and The Celestials.

Kreator's right in that it all boils down to personal taste. For me personally, I understand what you're saying and I see the same thing, I guess there's just a hand full of newer songs that appeal to me more.

I'd still buy zombie 3 just for the sake of owning it, even if it is cheesy, it probably does have better acting than the Tree of Life, lol.

I'm not a big Argento fan, I watched Suspiria and turned it off halfway, his daughter though Asia is a pretty cool director, her adaption to THE HEART IS DECIETFUL ABOVE ALL THINGS was a gritty masterpiece, and she was great in Land of the Dead, World War Z will be amazing as long as Brad Pitt doesn't screw it up, his last film The Tree of Life was one of the worst films I've ever s...
