19 May 2013 - 09:25 AMJeff's parts are boring and sound like every "technically good" guitar player sounds like. There are a massive amount of guitar players like Jeff. He brings nothing interesting to the image or live visual aspect to the band either. He's pretty much replaceable and interchangeable.
James on the other hand may not have been the most technical player, but who cares? SP are an alternative rock band, part of the appeal is that they sound different and untraditional. BC's voice might make a singing teacher scream, but it sounds great within the context of his music anyway.
James was absolutely essential to the SP sound hugely because he was playing his instrument the wrong way.
It gave The Pumpkins their alternative edge along with things like Corgan's voice.
If you want to listen to bands made up of Jeff's, go listen to some prog or metal or something where everyone is incredibly talented but they all sound the same.
