What the hell can I say to this? I could almost CRY I love SP so much. I've been a fan since high school, I believe it was age 14 or so that I heard Siamese Dream. I remember seeing the video clip for "Disarm" first, and that was my introduction to the mighty Pumpkins. I never looked back.
I love every single SP album prior to Zeitgeist, and I am working on loving Zeitgeist too. I already love bits of it, but I want to love it wholly and unconditionally. ;p I'm not quite sure that is possible, but I'll do my darndest!! Anyway... There have only been a couple of songs in all the years I've been listening to SP that I haven't loved. Considering they have 100s of songs, that's not a bad effort!
My favourite album would still have to be MCIS, though it's hard to choose. Favourite song on the album has traditionally been "Thru the Eyes of Ruby", because it's a song that has everything - softness, loudness, sheer beauty, sadness, love, magic. You name it. But really, when it comes down to it, how can one choose a favourite song?
The Pumpkins have something for everyone. There's the beautiful slow ballads - and in that category are many subcategories, i.e. songs with just Billy and his guitar ("Soothe", "Medellia"); songs that seem to belong in musicals ("Cupid"); songs that are just so achingly beautiful you could weep ("In the Arms of Sleep"). Then we have the loud ear-shredding tunes like "An Ode to No One", "Quiet", "Hello Kitty Kat" (OMG one of the best songs ever written!). Then we have the more electro beats of "Pug", "Appels + Oranjes". We have the remixes, which I tend to love, even though I'm not a huge techno fan at all. There are also plenty of songs that are softer on the ears, for those who aren't so into the LOUD ("Today", "1979"). Oh yes, I could go on. But you get my point.
Let me just mention the LYRICS. Lyrics are crucial to a great song. That's probably the reason SP captured my heart so. Billy's lyrics rock. He covers such a huge range of the emotional spectrum in his backlog of work, and I don't doubt he'll continue to deliver in this arena too.
All of the above is why I adore the Pumpkins, though admittedly I am sad that James and D'Arcy aren't in the band anymore. It won't be THE SAME, but I am hoping it'll still be f*cking awesome, the way all of your gig reviews are suggesting it will be. I am thrilled to say I am going to see this band live for the first time ever, this year in Tucson! All this in spite of the fact that I live in Australia. Yeah!! I am going to the US for a friend's wedding, and managed to fit this show in during my stay. I am absolutely full of gid, because of all of the above - I feel THE LOVE, and always have. I can't imagine I'll ever stop.
Music is my religion and SP are my daily sustenance.
