This album shows why the pumpkins are different from their contemporaries

I always hated it when the pumpkins were lumped together with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and all of the other "grunge" and post-punk bands of the Seattle scene. While i love all of those bands as well, the pumpkins were much different and came from a different ilk all together and to me this album proves it. This album shows off their talent and love for heavy metal and psychedelia. While i love some of the bands of the grunge scene, the pumpkins' sound was what i was more naturally drawn to. Gish is the album that separated the SP from these other bands and made them truly unique both in their own time of music and for all time as well. Every song is raw, yet seductive. Dreamy, yet rationally contagious. There's something for everyone on this record. My personal all time favorites from the album are "snail" and "window paine." Both songs had many dynamics that were akin to something from black sabbath rather than something from the ramones. The varied song structure of the pumpkins is what kept me on my toes. One didnt know where a song would go next. They didnt adhere to the verse chorus verse structure of most pop songs (not that there is anything wrong with this, i just enjoy spontaneity and variety). As with this record and every other SP album that came afterward, there was always something new for the listener to discover each time he/she listened to the album. Always something new to appreciate that perhaps you didnt recognize before. That is what i love about any musician and any music; something that grows on you and something that is so intricate (whether simple or complex) that you continue to discover new things way past the first listen. I am going to by biased on any and eveery pumpkins record because i just think that they can do no wrong, whether that is true or not. This is why i will probably give every album and every song 5 stars. While not every album or song is the same, each one in and of themselves are unique and is able to move me in some way and they all have their own niche. No song is a throwaway song. Something not too many other bands can boast about. So with that said, I do give Gish 5 stars.

Personal favorites: Snail and Window Paine
