May 09, 2008 - every pumpkins fan knows best

i'm sure quite a few people on here were suprised by the competitive nature on this forum.

i think it is because over years the smashing pumpkins have written songs of such intimacy that each fan can get the sense that billy really understands them or their life,

i imagine that the competitive nature of fans comes out of a reluctance to accept that other people 'get' the pumpkins as much as they do

it feels like a love affair to be a smashing pumpkins fan. and i guess nobody wants to share a lover!

does anyone else have opinions about why pumpkins fans compete with each other?

My comments were not based on any feeling of being attacked by any of you individually, but were based on my observation of interaction on this site in general. Some of the threads I had in mind in particular I didn't even comment on, but just read through. I'm just less than impressed by the tone some individuals take with others on this site and I often sense a certain pettiness. I wouldn't say I'm completely guiltless either, I just think we could use a shift in environment. I am also a little weirded out by the way some people refer to the band. It just seems a little much at times, even to me- a hardcore fan.

Not just fans

About this Tsarevna comment
"We are ALL JUST FANS HERE, fans who love the music and relate to it in our own special way. The sooner we make peace with the fact that none of us has a more special relationships with the band, but rather realize that we ALL SHARE this special connection to the music, the faster we can create a stronger healthier community and forum for discussion."

For me it's just the contrary, all of us has a special relationship with the band and it is the connection we have.

Personnaly, I love the music but as a part of the greatest music which is Life itself. I love also the Pumpkin's music but if I was just fan of music, I wouldn't be here.

Yes tsarevna!

I agree with you completely. Peace n' love baby! I don't know a lot of people in person who are as big a fan as I am of SP and PJ, and when I meet someone who is, I'm always like "Cool! Kick ass!" So, it's disturbing how vicious and... vindictive people sometimes get on here... would we be like this with each other in real life or is it just the nature of the blogging-realm or what???

As far as I can tell...

...not a single person on this forum is capable of critically analyzing the band without bias.

one should never take criticism as a personal attack

i personally don't understand where any of the hostility is coming from on this site. like, i am not really sure what you are talking about- there being aggression or something.

we all contribute to eachother and i think we really, for the most part, agree with one another.

we have differences in album preference and whatnot, but i think this specific thread shows us that we actually do get along.

we might bicker amongst ourselves, but i think that is simply born out of being on the internet. we can't really hear eachother's tone of voices, ya know?

i think we all in this thread understand that there are crazy fan(ataic)s and there are people who enjoy the aesthetics of the band.

we also have different lives and different experiences. we all don't know everything, and that goes for the band. i think it is very valuable for all of us to lay our cards on the table and share with eachother so we do have a larger sense of ourselves and who we are as a whole in this little community.

we should never take criticism as a personal attack- but there is no waste in debating criticism and try to get to the root of issues you might have with someone else, or another's ideas.

i have been coming up with a few ideas for posts. one that i really like is posting a song and disecting it and then asking for others opinions on what the song might mean and a critique of my critique. even just posting a song and sharing what it means to you or how it helped us in any way.

i think if we all did this each week it would be really fun. i think i am at an age where i have gone back to the music at different points in my life and have discovered it on a different level each time. i would really want to hear others view points on specific songs and lyrics.

(i am currently listening to an 11 hour lecture on literary criticism and i am really anxious to apply it to the pumpkins.

sound fun?

who wants to begin?

:)

I meant no rudenessin my statement to you at all tsarevna ..

I'm one those ppl that outward reflect, what I hold for Billy & pumpkins.Of course there is always a line you must not cross as a fan.I've seen some go to far..lol.

I can understand your statement "how some get bent out of shape over someone else getting some minor fact screwed up, as if it matters".Me being basically a new fan myself.I know,i don't even know half of what some of these longtime fans know. They can really rip head off for it,i know..lol..But,for most part SP.com fans have been very nice to me here. But for the most part really great & awesome people here.Really kind in nature.

TS

I agree with you all

I am laughing to my self as the one person I thought that would reply on this thread has not.

I think that the SP have such a huge and diverse fan base that it is only natural that opinions are not always accepted the way they were intended. Its the way these opinions are analyzed, cut and pasted and then commented on that gets my goat.
I have commented on this in the past and have only been a member of the site a month and a half. i am glad I am not alone with my observation.
In the eyes of Jackie moon ... I say............ ELE ( Everyone Love Everyone )

i agree with tsarevna

we all need to calm down, and be nice. it has been better over the past couple of months, but we do need to realize, we are not the only ones who view this site, and what kind of picture are we painting for the new fans who might want to come and enjoy this site?

And to TreeSpirit, I wasn't referring to people drawing inspiration from or being pulled through by the music when I was talking about the "glorification" of the relationship between band and fan. I think any good music should touch people on some level. My main point is that too many people here tend to couch their fandom in overly glorified terms and are often possessive over the band- not just for laughs *I'm their #1 fan, ha ha*, but in all seriousness. I would consider myself a relatively hardcore fan so I do get the whole connectedness to the music thing. I love the SP and their work. I just think some people are overly wrapped up into the whole fan experience. It’s fine to be hardcore, but there is being hardcore and treading the line towards something less healthy. Some fans act as though they know the band and have some personal claim over them that somehow transcends cyberspace and their ipods. I also am a little disturbed by how bent out of shape some get over someone else getting some minor fact screwed up, as if it matters. I believe these sorts of issues are the source of the odd comment like people are cocky, etc. here. Ultimately I just think that this site could have a healthier environment and more civil fan interaction.
And, just a thought, but maybe it would be easier to bring more fresh blood on board if we all did create a less closed off, cut throat environment. Given dwindling numbers and the fact that most people surf the web for music, we should stop and think- are we helping the band any by all of this? SP fans are loyal as hell and I think most are probably decent people at heart, but who wants to join us when we treat each other so bad at times. Half the time it’s like we are all dug in around Pumpkinland shooting each other from our internet barracks all in an effort to lay claim to and protect the prize within.
In a sense we represent the band on these sites, and the endless bickering and BS reflects poorly on the SP community as a whole. Moreover, we probably do little to discredit the criticism that the Billy and the SP are a bunch of arrogant *blanks*. I mean if his core fans act so f*n pompous- hey, maybe we're just all following the leader.
We need to get along- cut the crap. We are ALL JUST FANS HERE, fans who love the music and relate to it in our own special way. The sooner we make peace with the fact that none of us has a more special relationships with the band, but rather realize that we ALL SHARE this special connection to the music, the faster we can create a stronger healthier community and forum for discussion.
