May 15, 2008 - SP Vs Nirvana

Does anybody else think that Nirvana is completely overrated? Anywhere you read it's always about how great Nirvana is and what a genius Kurt Cobain was, when Billy Corgan is twice the songwriter and guitarist Kurt was. Just wondering if anyone else feels the same way.

ppl are really angry lol...

saying kurt got popular cuz of his death is kind of stupid considering he was a part of the most successful rockband of the era before he died... i started with nirvana and then i started liking the pumpkins.. i find the pumpkins music to have more depth but i also find joy in the simplicity. of nirvana.. just because you put 28353925739485 layers of feedback on a song doesent make it good... corgan is obviously a better guitar player... i put them even on lyrics im sorry but in utero has some amazing lyrics... and kurt most deffinately could sing and if you think his voice sucks what do you think of corgans????? the only reason corgan even sounds decent on record is cuz his voice is drowned out with distortion and hes got an assload of effects on his voice.... ie ALL OF SIAMESE DREAM... not that i dont find his voice beautiful but tonally speaking his voice is not the greatest thing in the world.. yeah thats my OPINION...

Wait a second?

How could I possibly feel more self-important than I am, if self-importance is a qualification that is solely defined by how self-important I feel? I couldn't possibly feel more self-important than I am if I am as self-important as I feel.

Besides, I don't understand why the lot of you have a problem with me providing a counter argument. As my internet-using forefathers once stated, "arguing on the internet is like competing in the Special Olympics: even if you win, you're still retarded."

let it go

just let it go ghostchild1979 there is really no point in trying to argue with someone who is never wrong and just wants to cast insults at the people he looks down upon...
Stop feeding his ego, you're making him feel more self-important than he actually is...
I love Nirvana no matter what anyone else says...

Could be that we're completely right. Opinions are such pesky little things...

Take one listen to that album and tell me that Nirvana had lackluster music, or that Kurt couldn't sing, or that he only wrote about one thing.

I'll say it again....you people just aren't paying attention if you don't see the genius there.

You're the idiot who doesn't understand that any opinion (at least stated by myself) on this website is not actually intended as a statement of fact. Of course, you're welcome to continue along in this state of confusion, but seeing as I'm giving you such an explicit description, I hope you'll realize that when we as a whole make statements to the effect that "X is better than Y," we are really just offering an opinion. Besides that, Nirvana was a much worse case, bashing the music business while simultaneously taking a major league record deal. Robert writes pop music among his other tunes, and there's no harm in a track like Friday having commercial success. The dude knows how to make a catchy tune as well as he does how to make something dark and brutal.

Also, sarcasm is only funny when it's subtle, stupid.

fact vs. opinion

"and The Cure certainly make better music than Nirvana, or most other bands for that matter." Once again this is a case of someone mistaking their opinion for factual information. Note to author: YOUR OPINION DOES NOT EQUAL FACT.
Although it is hard to argue with the cultural impact and significance of songs like "it's friday I'm in love"
mmmmmmmm taste the sarcasm....

Well, please understand that my comment wasn't really directed at your post. It's a commonly held belief that Nirvana were at the fore-front of the alternative music renaissance of the early 90s, and I was more reacting to that idea, which you alluded to with your post. Also, while it's possible that the Pumpkins may have broken up earlier if they had not met with financial success (and debatable as to if the band should have given up while they were ahead) we can't simply assume this. They could very well have gone on to become an even better, more focused band through toiling in obscurity. Certainly we hold MBV in incredibly high regard despite the fact that the band essentially ceased to exist after the release of Loveless. I'm not saying Nirvana wasn't important, because they clearly were, but personally Kurt just wasn't all that talented. He couldn't sing well, couldn't play well, wrote about one thing, and got a lot of credit for being a disillusioned youth.

I'm not judging Nirvana because they inspired a lot of really wretched acts. So did the Beatles and Zeppelin and a lot of other great classic bands. It's simply the nature of the beast that there will always be imitators of the popular, and they almost always fail horribly. However, my distaste for Nirvana stems mostly from Nirvana's lackluster music, and not from their influence, which is certainly substantial. But I still don't think that music as a whole really needed Nirvana. Making alternative rock popular only allowed for a lot of terrible bands like Nickelback to become rich and famous, and that totally sucks balls. There was and always will be great underground music regardless of the popularity of the genre.

Personally, Foo Fighters suck and their fame is completely undeserved. And honestly, there was a lot going on in the 80s before Nirvana came around. Maybe you've heard of The Cure? I'd certainly hope so, and The Cure certainly make better music than Nirvana, or most other bands for that matter.

um, yeah...

just because you dont like nirvana doesnt mean they didnt have an impact and influence on bands and music in general. nickelback, puddle of mudd, candlebox, vast, and staind are just a FEW of the bands who say they were influenced by Nirvana. not to mention without Nirvana there would be no Foo fighters, and who would deny that they are one of the biggest and successful rock bands out there right now.
SP is incredible and have also influenced many bands, but why are you trying to compair them with Nirvana? sure, they came out around the same time, but they are different styles, different music, and have different personal ideals.
Also, Nirvana were the ones that brought originality and honesty back to the music industry. Before them it was just shit like Whitesnake and Posion, bands who werent into the music FOR the music, they were just riding the mainstream train to money, fame, and getting with groupies. Nirvana played how ever the [bad word removed] they wanted, same with SP. they both did their own thing and have given us something amazing and that will last forever. their music
