February 01, 2008 - Zeitgeist goes gold

Ladies and gentlemen, Zeitgeist has been certified gold in the US by the RIAA.

For those of you who may not know exactly what that means, an album can be certified gold in the United States after reaching sales of 500,000 units.

you can't compare, cause mainstream music is so diffrent today. I don't feel the same way about new music from new artist the same way I feel about SP. And SP new music still gives me the same vibe as does the older stuff. And not just because I am a huge SP fan, I love lots of music, Led Zep, The Beatles, Ozzy, and such but no other band gives me the same felling (I geuss that is what I am trying to say, and put that in for lack of a better word) when I listen. The SP make you feel thier music, not just say, wow I like that song, you say, WOW I WAS FEELING THAT TOO!! I don't know any true fan that doesn't feel that way. Mainstream music today doesn't really make me feel a connection the way SP does, I geuss no band really does. but that's just my opinion.

You cannot compare the 90's era sales to this

The early 90's were a completely different time in record sales. Online downloads have changed everything. I bet the number of people who actually own his album is in the 3 million range for the US. I could be way off but i wouldn't be sursrised at a number that high.

Plus there's no way a rock album is going to blow away numbers these days. Nickelback sells well b/c they sold out, SP sells the number of albums they do b/c they didn't.

If Billy decided to make his band sound like Fall Out Boy maybe they'd have a few mainstream singles (not that Tarantula didn't do well)but I'd prefer that the mighty SP decline in popularity but soar in the integrity of their own music than the other way around.

Another Brazilian here

And I couldn't agree more about what GlassBR said. There are LOTS of TSP fans around here, some richer ones (which is not, unfortunately, my situation) even travelled to Europe or US to see our beloved band, but they all agree that the feeling would be way better if the band played here.
We're nice, we're full of passion with this band we love so much, we would travel huge distances to see this band. I Really hope someone can hear our pray. 10 years waiting, and the band owes that to us since they didn't come here during Machina's Tour.

Hoping someone will listen to us,

Here in Brazil, the price of the Zeitgeist is very expensive, but it is not a reason to I not buy the CD.
Long before buying, I downloaded the MP3 and I have burned to listen to in my car, but even so, as I always did, bought the original Zeitgeist album, and even over the bonus version - Link proving: http://www.smashingpumpkins.com/photos_2532

I bought the CD, because as always I support the bands I like, and I THINK IT IS A QUESTION OF HONOR buy the CD to have the encarte and supporting the band that I love most in this world, the SMASHING PUMPKINS.

It would be very helpful if the price of the CD came cheaper here, but unfortunately than buy the CD come here more expensive than in the US or Europe.

We expect with much disappointment OF MORE THAN 10 YEARS of waiting for the band to come here, and they do seem to neglect our country and our homeland that both the loves.

Therefore, I would like to humbly request that if any of the band read this, consider coming here to Brazil, especialy for my city, RECIFE in Pernambuco . We have great concerts here as: Pearl Jam, Scorpions, Deep Purple, Placebo, among many others. Only the lack Pumpkins for me to die happy.

Thanks for reading,
and sorry for my bad English.

"Possibly something to do with the vast number of "fans" downloading it for free?

Just a thought."

They're probably downloading it for free because it's not worth the money.

So Zeheel?

So? If WE like it, it's already that!

Don't forget that it is 500 000 for the US. This is not including sales in Canada, Europe, South America and Oceania/Asia...

I think this is quite impressive, even more with the fact that Zeitgeist is made to rock and voluntarily does not have a pop, commercial touch.

Only Gold?

only 500 000 copies sold?

When you think of 7 millions copies sold of MCIS or 5 mill siamese dream, then it must be said that the comeback was a flop.

They sell 7 different copies of more or less one cd and still only 500 000?

Itīs all about the money. Money, money merchandising. I give a shit about it. I bought one cd, and now I regret it.

Thatīs disappointing. I guess the new album will be a flop as well, because billyīs time was in the 90s.

The most classic case is the Zwan album. Not a bad album mind you, but it could have been infinitely better. After following the band for a over a year previous to the album's release, I saw them play many different styles, including the acoustic-folk stuff performed under the "Djali Zwan" moniker. I understand Mary Star of the Sea was supposed to represent the electric, or "True Poets of Zwan" side of the band, but when you look at the number of amazing songs, i.e. For Your Love, Riverview, etc, that were passed up because they didn't fit the "sunny" mood Billy was going for, the album was kind of a dissapointment to me. Now, years later, I can appreciate the music for what it is: great guitar driven power-pop.

But it is too bad the Djali album/DVD never came to fruition.

i agree,
