Digital Music
Thursday, March 27, 2008 - 5:46 am - untitled2284
I'm all for the digital music thing...and I don't mind paying for it if the quality is good, but

a. Can we also download cover art?

b. Must we use itunes? It's a pain to use, it's not reliable and it would make more sense to cut Apple out of the picture and make the download available through this website.

is jimmy ill?

Is jimmy again on drugs?
Or is corgan suffering from depression.all these rumors go around...

i don´t care what they say as long as they do a better album than lame zeitgeist.

i mean, zeitgeist is already forgotten and really badly recorded

MP3 is worthless

I'm getting tired of bands releasing only in digital format, you do not have to use a "Record Label" to release a CD. Real music fans want a tangible item ( LP or CD), lamers would be happy with a digital download that they will lose within 5 years and then never listen to again.

At least NIN offered their fans to purchase a CD along with a download to get it to them quicker, this is Trent's way of keeping the fan happy...give then an option but as far as what SP did with American Gothic was pitiful to the long time fans.

I'll download a mp3 but I refuse to pay for it, make a CD available and I'll gladly pay for it.

Standing for What You Believe in
Wednesday, March 26, 2008 - 10:40 pm - slcpumpkinsfans
The Pumpkins have always worn their hearts on their sleeves, just like the Zero shirt from the Mellon Collie days. Even at times, if Billy has been cryptic or what not, the experiences they have been going through have come out in the music. Look at the fight against the record labels as not only heard on Mellon Collie but also with the release of its concept album and it also being a double disc(something people at the time were saying was crazy...but it went like 9 times platinum), look at the loss of their touring keyboardist...the death of Martha, all of which came out in the music on Adore. They did what they wanted to with Machina and Machina II, and the tour for Machina.

The Pumpkins have always stood for what they believe in. Zeitgeist is another album that shows the current state of affairs in this country, and how it's affected the Pumpkins. Once again, the current situation over the past several years comes out in their music.

I think this is a great thing...because you can see the band's progression and maturity. And, once again...they are never afraid to take a stand and do what they think is best for them, regardless of what others may think.

Never be afraid to stand for what you believe in and/or speak out for it!

Lyrics: John Mayer - Say What You Need To Say lyrics

Take all of your wasted honor.
Every little past frustration.
Take all of your so called problems,
Better put 'em in quotations.

Say what you need to say (x8)

Walkin' like a one man army,
Fightin' with the shadows in your head.
Livin' up the same old moment
Knowin' you'd be better off instead

If you could only...Say what you need to say (x8)

Have no fear for givin' in.
Have no fear for giving over.
You better know that in the end
It's better to say too much, than never to say what you need to say again.

Even if your hands are shaking,
And your faith is broken.
Even as the eyes are closin',
Do it with a heart wide open.

(Wide Heart)

Say what you need to say (x7)

Say what you need to, Say what you need to...

Say what you need to say.

Choosing the Higher Road
Wednesday, March 26, 2008 - 10:26 pm - slcpumpkinsfans
I try to never forget that my job is a sacred privilege. Music, the thing that binds you to me and all of us to the Universe is my light.

I like to read that you are still humble after much success. Being thankful helps steer us away from pride, which can lead to arrogance, jealousy, and other demons.

I also like the use of the word light which you use at the end, when you choose to take the higher road and say,

I choose light.

Light is a word with many meanings and used to represent so much, depending on the context in which it's used.

Light is often associated with the word good...which is the contrast to dark or also bad or evil. We have the light side of the force and the dark side...the light side being the side full of good intentions...the will to help others, while the dark side would want to hurt others...use revenge, give in to emotion.

So with universal concepts such as good and bad or evil...we have light and dark...which also represent this stark contrast. On a side note...light is also dual in nature...as both a wave and a stream of corpuscles (particles).

This contrast can be looked at in many ways. We often use the word light when describing a change, a new beginning. An example of this would be "By the Dawn's early Light..." where I picture the sun rising at the beginning of a new day. This new day gives us hope as one looks to the American Flag...which once stood for all that was good in America...all that stood for the values which America represented - based on its founding forefathers. Now, to some...that same flag, which gave someone hope on a new day, gives people feelings of hatred, envy, pride, jealousy, animosity...and so forth. It's interesting how one symbol can change based on the thing it represents changing...and people's view towards what it now represents to them...in their reality and perception.

People talk about the "Light at the end of the tunnel" often giving them hope...or an end to the current situation...usually one they'd rather not be in. It's a way out, leading them out of darkness to a better place.

Without light we may stumble, become lost, feel hurt, lonely...depressed. Physically, we need light...because of its affect on our bodies. Not only would we go blind if we lived in a cave with total darkness...but there's a chemical change in our bodies that light helps produce. That's part of the reason why certain people are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder: Winter Depression...they don't get enough light.

Light brings warmth..."you light up my life"...you bring emotional warmth to my heart and soul...make me feel happy inside.

Music can bring light to us...or it can bring darkness. It is tied into our emotions and feelings. It helps us feel sad, or happy...helps us feel angry, or brings us joy and sometimes to tears. What would Jaws or Rocky be without music. What about Star Wars or Superman?

Light is also described when referring to color. We have light and dark. A light color reflects light, while a dark color absorbs light. Interestingly enough, I like to apply that to people as well. You have people who are full of light and reflect that light outward towards others. You then have others who are full of darkness...and they would do everything in their power to steal that light from others...because they want some for themselves. And when they get it, they hold onto it and absorb it. They don't share it. They are the dark colors.

That reminds me of a scripture:
Luke 11:33-36
33 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.
34 The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.
35 Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.
36 If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.

also

Matthew 5:16
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

and

John 8:12
12 ¶ Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Jesus says he is the light of the world. He's referred to as the Son of God, and he refers to himself as the light of the world. The light of our world is the sun...spelled differently, but pronounced the same, nonetheless. So, the sun or Son is our light...that helps us not walk in darkness.

Light helps point out things that we might otherwise overlook...it helps direct our attention to specific things in our surroundings.

Never forget who you are or where you came from. And if you're not sure about those two statements...maybe it's time to start thinking deeply about them...pondering them. Who are you? What is your mission here on earth? What's to become of you when you die? Is this the second of three acts? What's the third one going to be like?

When we fill ourselves full of good things, we gain more light. And we can then share that light with others. Light, to me, equals love. We all need love, no matter who we are or where we live. So, Bring the Light!!

P.S. Happiness only real when shared

well then...

...the whole 'cluster of songs' sounds more like a band willing to just release anything they can think of, out of desperation.

The fact is CDs ARE STILL THE MAJORITY! with research estimating downloads POSSIBLY taking more than 50% of the market by 2012...but i reckon the trickle effect will make it more like 8 -10 years.

I just wish the pumpkins would just stick to writing awesome music(as they do)regardless of the format, because i think it's a sad day when a band changes the way they release material (ie a full album) all because of the changes in the industry.

Imagine PINK FLOYD released DARK SIDE over 2 or 3 years....it's a stupid idea.

Although we may not use the "album" or "full length cd" as a format anymore

I OFTEN FIND THAT IT IS A WASTE OF TIME TRYING TO COME TO A CONCLUSION OR GET AN ANSWER WHEN READING THINGS LIKE THIS. WE CAN ALL WRITE THINGS AND READ WHAT OTHERS HAVE WRITTEN BUT IT DOESN'T MAKE THINGS ANY CLEAR. SO JIMMY SAYS THEY MAY NOT USE "THAT FORMAT" ANYMORE. MAY/MAY NOT...I DON'T KNOW.

IF IT MEANS THERE WILL BE NO ALBUM THAT YOU CAN GO TO A SHOP AND BUY - THEN I THINK ITS BAD NEWS. AFTERALL - I CAN'T GET MY HANDS ON "SUPERCHRIST" - AS THAT IS NOT GETTING RELEASED HERE IN SUNNY SCOTLAND.

THIS IS ONE OF ONLY A FEW POSTS I HAVE MADE AS I HAVE TRIED TO SAVE TIME TRYING TO WORK OUT THESE POSTS/BLOGS. I FEEL THAT BANDS IN GENERAL GIVE OUT MIXED SIGNALS THAT DO CONFUSE ME. ONE MINUTE THEY ARE FOR SOMETHING THE NEXT THEY ARE AGAINST.THE POSTS OFTEN HAVE LOOSE INFORMATION THAT ISN'T ALWAYS CLEAR OR MEANINGFUL.

I READ ON HERE NOT LONG AGO THAT THE BAND WHERE GOING TO GO BACK INTO THE STUDIO AND RECORD A "BIG" ALBUM - "DOUBLE ALBUM" OR SOMETHING COMPARED TO "MELLON COLLIE" IN SCOPE. I DON'T KNOW. YET NOW THIS POST SEEMS TO GO AGAINST THAT. IM SURE THE POST WAS FROM AN INTERVIEW WITH BILLY.

YOU HEAR THINGS ALL THE TIME COMING FROM THE BAND AND THE SITE, LIKE A DVD IN THE WORKS (BILLY CORGAN ACOUSTIC ALBUM - METRO - ETC), THIS ACOUSTIC ALBUM, THAT HEAVY METAL ALBUM. ALL THE QUESTIONS ARE LEFT FOR US TO ANSWER AND WE THE FANS CAN EITHER SIT AROUND AND TRY TO MAKE HEAD OR TAIL OF IT ALL OR WAIT FOR A STATEMENT THAT HAS SOME REAL INFORMATION INSTEAD OF SCRAPES FROM THE TABLE TELLING US IN A LOOSE WAY THAT "THINGS ARE GOING TO BE THAT WAY/ OR NOT".

I RESPECT THE SMASHING PUMPKINS AND LIKE ALL THEIR WORK/ AND THE FUTURE OF THE BAND MEANS MORE THAN ANY OTHER FOR ME BUT I HOPE THEY CAN GET GREAT MUSIC OUT THERE AND IN THE SHOPS. IF "SUPERCHRIST" WAS A PRODUCT I COULD BUY - I WOULD. BUT IT IS NOT SOLD IN SHOPS - IM HOPING FUTURE SMASHING PUMPKINS SONGS/RECORDS/ ARE SOLD EVERYWHERE NOT JUST ON ITUNES OR IN GUITAR CENTERS OR CENTER GUITARS OR BEST BUYS (never heard of those places)

I SUGGEST PEOPLE FORGET ABOUT TRYING TO WORK OUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN AS I HAVE READ MANY OF THE REPLIES AND FEEL SOME ARE TRYING TO TELL US IN A CLEARER WAY THAN THE MAN HIMSELF WHAT IS AHEAD AND THE WAY THINGS WILL GO AND TRYING TO PUT PEOPLES MINDS AT REST OR GIVE THEM THE DIFINITVE ANSWER THAT IS CLEARLY NOT GIVEN IN THE POST. THATS WHAT I DON'T GET - IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY - SAY IT, BUT IF YOU ARE STILL NOT SURE - DON'T SAY IT. SAYING THAT YOU MIGHT DO SOMETHING JUST MAKES FANS GO CRAZY ABOUT THAT IT MIGHT ALL MEAN. MACHINA.

MY VIEW IS THAT I WOULD PREFER SONGS AND ALBUMS TO BE AVAILABLE IN SHOPS NOT JUST ONLINE. HOWEVER I DO NOT KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN FROM WHAT I JUST READ.

P.S. YES I DO KNOW WHAT CAPS LOCK IS. !

THIS IS MY LAST POST FOR A WHILE. YOU CAN HAVE YOUR EYES BACK!

This forum needs a Jump to Conclusions mat.

OK people....take a chill pill here.

First, I will state that I think it's a shame that CD's are a dying format too. I firmly stand on board with everybody who has already posted about wanting a physical product to hold and read and on and on...

...But not once has Jimmy said that the only thing they'll ever release is MP3's through itunes. You people are all jumping to conclusions and putting words in his mouth!

What's to say they won't release songs available for purchase through their own website (NOT itunes because itunes is shit...) in ultra-high quality formats with high-res image files of all the artwork and lyrics? You pay through the site, download everything, print off the images, burn your own CD, and you're done.

What he's talking about is releasing songs in small clusters as opposed to a full length LP all at once. Read the quotes again. He even talks about the small clusters of songs building up to something bigger. So basically you DO have an album....it's just released in pieces that YOU get to re-assemble.

...Or maybe they do the work of putting together the physical copies themselves, but they can just do supply and demand....however many orders there are for them, that's how many they produce.

As long as the sound quality is totally top notch, and I can get the artwork too, I would have absolutely no problem whatsoever getting the material in the way I just described. Yes, I would miss going to the record store on release day and seeing fellow fans as excited as I am. But, the times they are a-changin'....

Fuck this being Musical History...:(

Yes,of course the musical format has changed, but it always stayed physical..!!I know what you're saying, but this is so different..What we are all witnessing is the progressive disintegration of the physical format..and that makes me feel physically ill..Artists should be doing everything that they can to stop it,and so many are,but shit,SP want to remain 'vital' by pleasing the "under 24"s??This whole problem is a direct result of a generation(of which, unfortunately,I belong to)who know nothing about music, yet are going to change it fundamentally.
Sorry for sounding geriatric, but the whole thing really upsets me...
Although,in relation to the Pumpkins going down this path,I'm really taking it with a grain of salt.I mean,we've heard about so many different plans before, for whatever;releases, direction, but things haven't always turned out that way.My God,I hope I'm right.
