pumpkins tune...
Monday, April 14, 2008 - 7:26 pm - birde33
i heard a pumpkins tune playing on a car commercial once.
probably 8 months ago.
i only saw the ad once, but i was really taken aback.
i never thought billy would sell out. maybe there's another lawsuit to be HAD!!! : ) ????
ahhh....must be related to the comment below.
why would billy allow a car company to use his songs, and not pepsi?

selling out to one is just like selling out to all. i think. i'm a huge sp fan, but i really think they are milking this album too much. richness is not of this world.
"you don't take nothin' with you but your soul, think."

I've got something to say!!!

Uh, Dear Billy Corgan,
I AM A BIG FAN.

Love your music, love you a lil, til you start bitching about record labels pimping your old music less than a year after you PIMPED OUT YOUR NEW MUSIC TO THE NEW F^%CKING TRANSFORMERS MOVIE. AND CHEVROLET. If you did that because you loved the transformers back in the day and you drive chevrolet cars, then cool, but there's no accounting for taste.

Eat your words, dear. Had Virgin cut you a bigger check, this lawsuit business wouldn't be news. Period.

Love,
Brian O.

ps, COME PLAY NEW YORK CITY!

well it's interesting that he's suing virgin. i sure didn't see 18 million different versions of mellon collie when it came out. i mean i understand that they used the smashing pumpkins name to sell more pepsi and stuff on amazon, and also they've used pumpkins songs for baseball and stuff, but i'm pretty sure corgan had control over that and the songs on guitar hero and rock star. this reminds me a bit about when wacko jacko bought the rights to the lennon/mcartney catalog. sir paul once said, "'Revolution' isn't about sneakers; it was about a revolution." the virgin pumpkins catalog isn't about pepsi and amazon, it speaks for itself, and corgan has every right to sue them, but at least virgin didn't release a bunch of different versions of the same album, and then a couple of months later release one with almost ALL the extra songs on the other ones plus a new one and a DVD (MSOTS by Zwan had a bonus DVD,but it didn't cost extra, and there was only ONE version of the album. TFE didn't even have anything extra except for, oh yeah, if you bought it at target, you got tilt with it. whoopee.) anyway i understand where he's coming from, but it's a little hypocritical since he signed with reprise and they tried to turn zeitgest into the biggest cash cow of 2007.

Yes Willy'um don't go, someone needs to take a stand...

Little Willy, Willy wears the crown, he's the king around town
Dancing, glancing
Willy drives them silly with his star shoe shimmy shuffle down

but you can't push Willy round

Inside, outside
Willy sends them silly with his star-shine shimmy shuffle smile

But you can't push Willy round

The Payola Factor

Remember in the days of Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie? The Smashing Pumpkins were all over MTV. Their videos were on a pretty good rotation cycle and in 1995, they were the opening act of the VMA’s. That night, the band took home the most awards, a total of 5. What happened between those days and the year 2000?

Collectively, let’s look back at what was going on in the music marketplace after the big year of the Pumpkins. In the late 90’s and in 2000, music and trends became divided and began going through a transition phase. It was the beginning of the whole teeny bop video music craze. Driving MTV were acts like Britney Spears and NSYNC, and they were beginning to take the spotlight off of indie and alternative bands. Today, looking back at the 2000 MTV music awards, it was quite apparent that the Smashing Pumpkins were not on board with the network for reasons unknown. MTV has made bands as well as broke bands, and in 2000, the Pumpkins received very little air time from MTV with any video release from Machina I. Radio often picked up the pulse of MTV, and that may have played a role in regards to the amount of airplay the band received from radio stations.

What was the role of payola during this time? We all know that payola was and is going on in the music industry, and in 2005-2006 major labels were prosecuted for it in court, and some of the labels settled out of court for large amounts of money. Could this have been the cause of the bitterness and the demise of the Pumpkins and Virgin? Most of us reading the blogs were not privileged to the actual conversations and contracts that took place between the Pumpkins and Virgin.

Having said this, if Billy’s contract with Virgin has been violated, let the courts find in his favor. Again, Corgan will set new president in this new age of music, musicians’ rights, and e-commerce. As fans, we support him and want him to win and as a business person, I personally will be keeping tabs on this case.

Many thanks to Billy for all that he and the band has done for everyone.
