When I was 18 (1993), the drummer in my band made me a mix tape of The Smashing Pumpkins, and I thought they were ok at first, but then "Geek USA" played, and I was completely blown away.
But really, I became a fan when I was going through some tough love with a girl at that time. I was in depression. I took a long drive in my car, and put on Siamese Dream. When 'Mayonaise' came on, I didn't feel so dumb, alone, depressed, etc.
"I just want to be me."
Maybe it's a dumb lyric, but at the time, it was the perfect statement for where I was and what was happening in my life. Every time I sing along with that song now, it takes me back to that connection.
I've been madly in love with The Smashing Pumpkins ever since that long, lonely drive. Their music has and will always relate to me and touch me in a way that very few other bands have.
