Smashing Pumpkins was/is a musical deviation from the status quo of mind-numbing-North-American culture, induced to preoccupy us while the new global community is being built without any public uprising. Their sound and mentality has always been poppy enough to get your attention- which allows access to their "greater" non-single works that do not gain the lowest common denominator's attention. Give up just enough ground to leave room to do what you really want when able.
I am older now and teen angst doesn't really concern me, but Smashing Pumpkins helped me through those years when I was 16, hated my life, and was looking for new musical influences (through Corgan's own tastes and influences I have discovered artists like the Cure, My Bloody Valentine, Cheap Trick, Gary Numan, the Frogs!, and more).
