...it was then cassettes back then when i personally bought/heard my 1st smashing pumpkins..their "siamese dreams" album-ohh wat a joy!! well the intresting part as of how i brought myself to buy the album was from aN earlier/previous chapter of the story...i actually heard "today" on my collegemate's car tape player, it was on a "pop is dead" compilation and we came upon listening to the song...i remembered the arguement that we had while listenig to it and it was wether the singer was a lady or a guy? everyone thought it was a lady singer plus the fact that we saw a photo of the pumpkins with a girl (darcy) in it then later said "see i told you it was a lady singer"...furthermore "today" does sound like a lady singin' (sorry billy..no offence) that song. well you know that i was wrong...after further research (nobody ever sounded quite like billy you know-well xcept for "B-Real" of Cypress Hill but that's entirely a diffirent story hahahaha). still that song "today" remains deep in my head-back then it was the 90's and my opinion was that there was no other rock/alternative/punk bands that could play a song that diffrently, firstly the guitar sounds (pumpkins) were heavy/THICK/layered/diverse!! NIRVANA was just too destructively loud..yeah catchy tunes but thats pretty much it (Loud/....later boring) SONIC YOUTH was too distorted, BUSH was to english/lame grunge. PEARL JAM was good, loud, big but hidden for the most part of their glory days dont know..that's just what i xperienced....back then in the 90's. The Smashing Pumpkins was/has everything that i liked in a rock band. They're odd and the same time very very unique. odd-back then u could hardly see a female bassist..very few. unique-their sound..its way heavier then anyone else. heavy and yet melodic/harmonically heavy with graceful lyrics (teenage angst driven hahaha) but that's wat made it great. love the pumpkins i have back then and so will i in the future..always. p/s: it be even GREATER!!! if they could come over to "kota kinabalu/malaysia" for the CONCERT tour..THANKS
