WHY I'M A FAN
(But Not a "TRU
In 7th grade, age 12, Smashing Pumpkins released Disarm. At this time, I was still very much into childish music and whatever my mother was listening to at the time, but Disarm really changed that for me. It sucked me in and made me appreciate real music.
I was a sucker for everything they did (though was a little annoyed with Adore at first, I'll admit). I saw them 3 times in concert (Summerfest, Adore Tour, Machina Tour, and the UC show). Was very sad when they ended, but got over it fairly quickly. They put out a hell of a lot of good albums that would never be taken away from me, and it seemed like they ended on a high note.
When Zwan came around, I was excited. It was the first time seeing Mr. Corgan in a while and the early music sounded good (accoustic Zwan was really enjoyable). They left just as fast as they came and I even forget why. Drugs and egos and blah blah blah.
Billy's solo album. Well...we'll save that for another day.
When Billy put out the ad stating that he would be bringing back the Pumpkins, I have to say I was skeptical. I knew James would never be involved and it really upset me. For all of you who say that they'll be just as good without him and he wasn't needed in the first place (was just a pretty face who played rhythm guitar), ask you this: Why did Billy Corgan himself admit that he couldn't go on without James? Why did he let James wanting to leave break up HIS band? Why didn't he do this when Jimmy left/was kicked out? With D'Arcy? James was an integral part of The Smashing Pumpkins. While this new encarnation will be good, I'm sure, it's still sad to not have James around. I think he grounded Billy and reigned in his crazy a little. Let's hope these new folks can do the same.
In that vein - it's truly childish that "Let It Come Down" is not included in the Discography.
Anyway, I'm excited to see them perform again. As hurt as I am about certain aspects of this "reunion" (which really is not a reunion at all), I would love to hear certain songs again. And I look forward to running into some old folks from the O-Board.">F4N!@!")
